IRS e-file Boondoggle

So I try to e-file my taxes and I get this reject notice from the IRS which states my tax info is rejected because someone else claimed my spouse or used her SSN, as a dependent, on their taxes.

This just stinks. This means there is probably some jerk out there that stole my wife's identity, so the IRS has to punish me because of some criminal. So the first thing that pops into my head is what?

Excuse me for saying this, but, "Those darn Mexicans!"

If you think about it, it could just be a mistake and maybe someone used the wrong SSN. However, I immediately just assume someone stole my wife's SSN and illegal immigration comes to mind as the culprit.

Maybe I am evil and shouldnt think like that.

You may be pissed, but this could seriously be an issue.

When is the last time you pulled yours and your wife's credit reports from all 3 bureaus? I would get that done STAT. www.myfico.com

Recheck your wife's SSN on your tax returns as well (verify from her actual SS card, not just memory). It could be just a stupid mistake on your part (been there, done that-with one of my kids).

Otherwise I strongly second the advice to check your credit reports NOW. I would freeze them unless you have some upcoming need for financing, etc.

PS-I doubt greatly the identity thief is one of "those darn Mexicans," that's a Fox News/Lou Dobbs myth. The illegals aren't going to be filing tax returns.

This actually happens quite frequently.

Check her credit reports immediately and get on it.

I already double and triple checked the ssn. Hell, I did that before I sent it in. I even have her actual SSN Card. Sure enough it is exactly the same.

My wife's purse was stolen at her place of work by a contracted cleaning firm. So I am guessing the cleaning firm people stole her SSN card in her pocketbook. You can guess what kind of people were on the contracted cleaning crew. My guess would be undocumented workers. They often buy stolen or fake SSN cards.

Anyway I am looking into this. Filing a police report, Contacting Credit Bureaus, making a Fraud claim with Social Seurity Administration, GPO, and technically the Federal Trade Commission is the central reporting agency for Identity Theft according to the IRS.

What really burns me up is they will not accept my taxes, but they accepted the other bozos. Nothing like a country where you are Guilty till proven innocent.

What a PITA. Rest assured that no punishment will be levied against the person who stole their SSN, either.

Wow, this is my worst nightmare ....... that either my wife or my identity gets ripped off or our credit gets totally hosed. I check our SSNs frequently for piece of mind.
We have friends in another town who lost thousands of dollars because of identity theft. People, this happens every day. Cover your asses!

The IRS accepts the first one in. How is there system to know that it is the false persona?

Look at it this way - maybe your wife will get extra SS credits:p

That happened to me last year. I did my daughter's taxes for her and when I tried to efile the return it was rejected. I triple checked everything and even tried to use another efile site with the same results. She mailed in the printed forms and got her refund without any hassle. I wonder if the IRS is at fault.

Believe it or not, it is entirely possible.

Some of them DO pay in taxes and want their refund at the end of the year.

It makes them appear legitimate, particularly when someone wants to see a copy of the previous years' tax return or what not.

But this has got to be the absolute stupidest thing ever. . .I mean the paper trail it leaves when the person who's SSN the illegal alien used discovers this is like a huge flashing pink neon sign saying "Here I am! Come deport me, please!" It is pretty clear to the IRS who the fraudulent return came from and where the refund check went isn't it?

Piasabird, have you contacted the IRS about this yet? What are they telling you? Are they going to give you an extension until this gets worked out?

Nor will any punishment be levied against the politicians who allowed the illegal aliens to invade the country, contributing to the identity theft problem.

Interestingly, in the last comprehensive immigration reform bill, there was an amendment to be added on which specified that if you had committed identity theft, and you were illegally in the country, then you would not be eligible for citizenship.

That amendment was defeated.
