i have a folder where i store all my ripped and downloaded mp3s and windows xp autmatically customizes the folder so that when i right click the explorer, it gives a whole bunch of sub menu options. (arrange by: size, duration, year, artist, etc.) and i dont want this. i want it normal, like the menu they give in all the normal folders. (arrange by: name, size, modified, etc.) is there any way to turn off this annoying feature? i tried folder options and "customize this folder" and i cant seem to find anywhere to stop its automatic setting.

1. I think you mean "you're" instead of "your". If not, your sentence no verb ;).
2. No, assuming LongCoolMother wants what I want, we want detail view, but with normal columns shown rather than the music fields.
3. Actual answer (which is kinda ok, but better woudl be for windows to never use a different view): right-click one of the column headers and pick the normal columns. Windows remembers this pretty well for me.

Try clicking on the "customize folder" option and changing the template. Maybe that'll do it.

I've already done all of these suggestions. For me at least, Windows always resets the folder settings anyway, as long as there is a single mp3 or wma file in the folder. So while the format does briefly change, as soon as you reopen the folder, it's back to the old, annoying layout. And if I manually add/remove columns, the same thing happens afterwards--it just reverts to how it was before (contrary to item 3 in CTho9305's post :( ).

I've been trying to fix this for months. So far, nothing doing.

THANKS!!! that worked. you have to right click the top bay (where it says name, size, type, etc.) and then uncheck the ones you dont or do want. here's a screenshot. http://s88954922.onlinehome.us/DEMO.jpg

Do you by chance have many many folders? Say, over 400? If you do you have surpassed Windows XP "normal" limit as to how many folders it can "remember" the settings for. You can use something like X-Setup to alter this number to something much higher. Or there is a registry key that can be changed (that's what X-Setup actually does). I don't know the key, as I go the lazy non-editing-of-the-registry route. See if that helps.
