Irresponsible pet owners...

My wife got a call from her sister on Sunday morning telling her that her sisters dog had run away the previous night and she didn't know what to do.

Some back story, apparently her sister went drinking Saturday night and was dropped off at home. After taking a nap for 1.5 hours, she got up and drove over to her friends house outside of town in the woods. She dropped her Corgie (sp?) puppy in their yard to play with their dogs. Keep in mind, this dog is 6 months old, short haired, tiny, and it's -10F outside.

About a half hour later, she comes back outside and looks for her dog. It's gone. She proceeds to drive around for the next 4 hours looking for him.

Anyway, after putting up some signs today, she goes to a local vet and finds out a lady called in about finding a dead Corgie on the side of the road Sunday morning. It was frozen solid and had been hit by a car.

Needless to say, her sister was broke up about it and starts talking about getting another. :|

I'm sorry, I know the girl (she's 21), she's had the dog for like 5 months and had absolutely no control over him and let him pretty much run wild. She has no business owning another dog for a while. But, that is just my opinion.

Maybe she should get a cat next time and keep it INDOORS. Cats seem to be more self-reliant, anyway.... and they definitely let their owners know when they're being forgetful.

So she's out drinking, probably gets home well after midnight, sleeps for an hour and a half and takes the dog over to a friend's house at what, like 4:00 a.m.? Was she still drunk?

Damn! You have got to be kidding me.

That reminds me. Was out drinking last week and some chick had brought her short haired dog with her to the bar and had tied the poor dog up outside. It wasn't quite as cold as the experience you talk about OP but it was in the 20's that night. I ended up talking to the owner but her response was "He's a trooper, he can take it" :|

Poor doggie... :(

And it goes without saying, really, that your wife's sister is an irresponsible idiot.

I think you should consider calling the SPCA for that area and making an anonymous tip. People like that need to be taught a lesson, whether they're your family or not.

$10 sais she's blond.

See appears to be too stupid to own a dog from what you have mentioned. A cat would be a better option indeed, just tell her a few stories that'll make her terrified to let it outside and it should be fine, you wifes sister might even be well trained in a few months.

Numbnut pet owner!

With 7 cats that stay in a large 20x20 (2 car garage size) screened in porch that come in occasionally. Metal Screen is the best defense for now, but when I save up the money, It's going to be glass enclosed. Why? Because everyone in this neighborhood thinks it's ok to let dogs run loose.

If your dog dies from getting out of your own yard????? It's your own fault. If I had a dog, I'd have an 8ft fence, and it would be buried 1 ft in the ground...... I just make sure my pets never get loose is all. AKA Invisible fence, etc! (for dogs)

I would not own a dog unless I had enough property for him to roam around in. I certainly feel for anyone owning a pet that dies. Just getting a dog and neglecting it........ the damn thing barking, and neighbors complaining about it?

Not worth it in my opinion.

Get a Ferret or Rat and let it chew all your ENT./Phone cables. That's what you deserve!

Sadly, irresponsible pet owners seem to be the norm. I've been having the same problems here since I moved into the apartments.

About 3/4 of the households here own pets, and almost all of them are dogs. When we move in we get a VERY thorough lecture on pet responsibilities and then then people just ignore the rules. In theory if someone gets 3 warnings (in addition to the speech at lease signing) they get kicked out. But I think the admin office must be full of wimps.

NOBODY uses a leash (which is required) and most folks leave big heaping piles of turds all over the place, though the biggest piles are left on lawns of those who dont own pets, especially mine.
Whenever I reported someone the staff would tell me they couldnt do anything without evidence. So I put a digital camcorder in my window facing the lawn most often used as a commode. With a 30GB built in hard drive the camera could go for about 14 hours on the low quality setting.
2 days later I get a notice on my door telling me to remove the camera from my window. I take it out, and sure enough, that night I find a nice big shit right outside my bedroom window.

The only thing I hate worse than lazy irresponsibility is the kind that comes from people in positions of authority that are too afraid to enforce rules and regulations.

I still havent found anything to scare the dog owners away or deter the dogs themselves. I tried sprinkling chilli powder and a number of other nasty things on the grass but the constant rain pretty much nulls anything I do.

QFT

It's going to be a sad day whenever this fine piece of work gets knocked up and starts pushing out babies.

Try some wolf urine... you can get it online. That should last a good long time.

My former neighbors had 3 dogs in the 2 years we lived next door to them. They'd bring home a puppy, and then 3-4 months later it would be gone. I don't know what happened to them, but I cringed every time they brought home another dog.

Some people just shouldn't own pets. These are usually the same people who shouldn't procreate.
