Irresponsibility 101: Neighbors left for the weekend, left their two dogs outside.

We noticed first thing Saturday morning that our lousy-ass scum neighbors' a few houses down dogs roaming around our back yard (again). This isn't a surprise, as their dogs manage to "get out" of their yard quite often, mostly because of the several missing planks in their fence. Well, not this time - because their fence was completely fallen over. Again.

And of course when we went to go inform them of their escaped dogs, oddly, nobody was home. The dogs, thankfully, have been rather well mannered, if not skittish (my guess is they get beaten.. a lot). Some sort of poodle thing - he's the grumpy snot, and a pitbull puppy about 9 months old give or take.

So we checked, several times over the course of the day. Nobody home. Evening... nobody home. Night? Nobody home. Dogs were still out roaming the neighborhood this morning. Owners no where to be seen. It is now nearly 2 full days (though I assume they've been out since Friday night) and these dogs have not been cared for, save us and our immediate neighbors for some water and a few biscuits.

Should I point out that neither of these dogs are neutered? Most likely unlicensed and not vaccinated as well.

Animal control has been called, but they're not coming out until tomorrow morning. If I knew of a shelter, they'd be going there. It's a shame though, I'd rather take their owners to a shelter. Preferably NOT a no-kill shelter.

Stuff like this pisses me off. The way you describe the people sounds like they can barely care for themselves.... and they have two dogs? I'm glad you called animal control.

Cause the Escalade in the driveway... yeah. That should explain the whole situation right there.

If they don't have any food or water available for the dogs, at least in my state, that's a criminal violation for animal cruelty.

Pics of the fence that the dogs get out through? Where are the dogs being kept now, since there's no fence keeping them in the back yard?

It sounds like they aren't being kept anywhere.... they're just roaming the neighborhood. At least this is how I read it.

Where do you live? I can probably find a shelter for you before you can type:

"google.com" <enter> "animal shelter <your zip code>" <enter>

Nothing wrong with leaving a dog in a backyard with water and food if you are going to be gone for a few days. Just make sure the fence is secure and the dog can't escape.

OP, I feel your you. I am having issues with the neighborhood idiots ho own dogs (but shouldn't be allowed to).

Issue #1: Dogs left outside, wakes the neighborhood at 1-2 AM in the morning.

Issue #2: I just discovered that my dumbass lazy neighbor is too lazy to take their dog to take a crap ... so that they use the front yard as their toilet. Needless to say that it smells a bit in the front yard. If things do not improves the County will be called to deal with the health issues.

My neighbors are really dumb and apathetic ... they are renters.

it is wrong.
Dogs treated like shit suffer and become aggressive, a danger for society, and it's not even their fault.
It's unethical.

Also a dog has the istinct to eat all that he can, so you can't leave him enough food, and what if he trips over his water?

Seriously it's not that difficult to ask a friend or neighbour who knows you and your dog to come and check out on him if you really have to go, otherwise the dog should be kept in mind when planning holidays.

Our dumbass neighbors did it for a week last summer. Left a huge bowl of food and a water dispenser. Dog was going ape shit by like the 4th or 5th day. I sprayed him down with the water hose over the fence to cool him off a couple of times.

Not all dogs overeat. Ours have 24/7 access to food and outside. When we go on vacation, we leave the dogs at home (with friends who check on them once a day.) No problems at all. Trip over water?

How tall is their lawn and how many dandelions do they have per acre?

That's funny. How about if the yard was entirely dandelions? Now that wouldn't be trashy, that would actually be incredible.

OP simple question: what are the leash laws in your neck of the woods? You need to find this out asap. Some leash laws are very strict and you can really stick it to the bastard, and be on the right side of thr law.

The house where I grew up was out in the country, surrounded by farm fields. Every year we'd have people stop and ask if they could "harvest" the copious amounts of dandelions from the adjacent field. Given it wasn't our field, we didn't give a fuck.

As to your other question, apparently there ISN'T a leash law in our county. The law reads that the owner must maintain control over a dog at all times. Given that the owner wasn't even HOME... pretty sure that's not going to fly.

However, there is a leash requirement for our subdivision in the HOA covenant. So the above point is moot anyway.

Not all dogs eat all they can, only certain breeds.

We do rely on our neighbors and pay their kids to take care of our pets when we are gone overnight, but to say that it is unethical for others to leave their pets outside is too broad of a generalization. If they did this when their animals were chained up or otherwise restrained, it _could_ be unethical, but you can't make a broad blanket statement like you did due to circumstances of every environment. I'd feel totally comfortable leaving my dogs outside for a day or two if given ample food and water. They rarely bark, like our large fenced in yard, and really enjoy being out there. They also sleep under the porch during the day and chase squirrels. Sounds like dog heaven to me.
