System specs:
ECS K7S5A motherboard (disabled onboard sound and onboard nic--too many network errors)
AthlonXP 1600+ (1.4ghz)
Hercules MuseXL sound card
3com nic
Geforce 256 DDR

How can I properly get everything on it's own IRQ without reinstalling OS? It wouldn't let me change IRQ's in system manager. I'd appreciate any help since this new setup has randomly been restarting in games & I've been getting audio dropouts/pauses during gameplay & also the system performance has been "jerky." calling all anandtecher's for your expertise. Thanks!

Have you tried removing drivers and moving the NIC and sound cards to different PCI slots? It looks like the NIC might be in slot 1 which shares an IRQ with the AGP.

I probably shouldn't talk. I have the same board and I just checked Device Manager and I have the R8500, NIC and TBSC all on IRQ 5 along with 3 PCI to IRQ steering entries. My system runs fine though with Win98SE.

good luck

Nothing is in PCI slot 1.

Hercules MuseXL = Slot 2.
3Com Nic = Slot 3.
Geforce = AGP slot

I had problems with my board sharing the same IRQ for the on-board sound and the on-board NIC. I put in a PCI NIC and I haven't had any problems since, but it sucks to buy a board with built-in features that can't even be used together! Though it was an inexpensive board I am quite disappointed. The reviewers raved about this board and chipset, but having full functionality with a standard set of components (built-in or otherwise) should be the barest baseline for ANY motherboard review, IMHO. Good luck with your IRQ woes.

Disable your serial COM ports. That will free up 2 IRQs.

I've been using the onboard NIC for 5 months with no problems (don't need onboard sound with TBSC) and haven't had any problems. I believe that there is a modicum of luck in all system builds. I cannot, as yet, place the blame on the motherboard.

I found this advice at ocworkbench: you might try disabling your ACPI function if you haven't already. Here is the FAQ (#19 describes the issue) BIOS FAQ. Hope this helps.

I originally installed the OS w/ ACPI enabled in bios. After learning this ACPI problem, i turned it off in bios. I will try disabling the "com" ports. i love this message board :). Okay, I freed up 2 IRQ's by disabling com ports, BUT i keep getting the

<< This resource setting cannot be modified. >>

error message when I tried to manually change the IRQ of my NIC, etc. Does this happen because I had ACPI feature enabled in bios when I installed win98se?

Shouldn't there be an option in the BIOS to assign sprecific IRQs to the slots? If there is, assign it there instead.

I'll look into the bios tonight & try to change the IRQ assignments 4 each slot manually. If all else fails, should I try to reinstall OS with ACPI option in bios disabled? Thanks.

Make sure you have assign irq to vga enabled in the bios. I know the bios on the k7s5a isn't the greatest, so you may have a hard time
getting that irq situation worked out. Hardly ever will you be able to reasign an irq to a pci device from within windows. Usually that only
works on old isa/legacy crap. But hopefully having the bios assign an irq to vga will place it on irq 9, which appears to be free. Good luck.

I disabled the serial ports/game port/& midi port in bios, & when I rebooted everything was on its own IRQ. Haven't had time to test it, but everything appears to be ok. Still testing, it locked up & the screen graphics froze to some dashled scrambly lines on the screen during a game. It appears a little smoother, but I guessing there's more options I need to explore.

What game(s) is the machine locking up on? It may just be a game in need of an update patch.

<< Geforce 256 DDR >>

Your vidcard may just be showing it's age. Although, I have the SDR (using Det 11.xx or 12.xx, DX8) and it's still doing fine.

it locks up in Motocross Madness 2(sometimes it reboots with the video card reading 16MB & once it said 8MB of ram instead of 32). When I play counterstrike, i get reboots (not consistently, but has happened several times).

counterstrike. I play the game, but when a Map Change pops up it doesn't load, and an error message in the console tells me there is a missingfile/bad file. Whats weird is that next time i play I is a totaly different file, and with every reset of the computer, I can play CS again as if the file was never bad.
