IRQ sharing Problem (Sound Card and IDE controller on same IRQ?!)

I'f been suffering from a sporadic yet semi-frequent problem with sound. After installing my sound card (Trident 4dwave) I will sometimes what I call a sound "crash" triggered by the playing of a plus98 window's theme sound (like closing a window), mp3playback or any other soundfile. What happens is, the sound suddnely gets "stuck" and starts looping incessantly - only a half second bit, that just keeps ding-din-ding-dinging or whatever sound it clips and endlessly repeats. The computer DOES NOT crash, and if I turn off my stereo (through which the sound is outputted), everything is pretty normal.

I think I have narrowed it down to an IRQ problem. I notice that my sound card shares the same IRQ number with my promise IDE controller. However, if I go into the devices and select either the sound card or the Promise controller, I am unable to modify the IRQ setting. I make sue to uncheck the "use automatic settings" option, yet I still recieve a "No modifications allowed: THis resource setting cnanot be modified."

What's going on?

Any and all information is much appreciated!

Try removing the sound card from the system and then reserving that IRQ in the BIOS. Then boot to the OS, and then power down. Reinsert the sound card and reboot.

How stupid of me to leave out my rig specs:

EPoX 8KTA3
Win 98 (Not SE)
Panasonic CW7585b 8x4x32 CDRW
Afreey CD2050e 50x CD-Rom
Maxtor 20gig HD

IRQ ASSIGNMENTS:
IRQ 14 - OnBoard IDE Controller
IRQ 12 - Radeon DDR (Display Controller)
IRQ 11 - Maxtor ATA100 IDE Controller (Just a rebadged Promise Card - Same bios)
IRQ 11 - Trident 4dwave Sound Card
IRQ 10 - Phoebe PCI TVTuner (Audio Capture - Brooktree)
IRQ 10 - Phoebe PCI TVTuner (Video Capture - Brooktree)
IRQ 10 - PCI to USB Host Controller
IRQ 10 - Network Controller (Same as PCI to USB?)
IRQ 9 - ACPI Control (Onboard)
IRQ 5 - Simple COMM. Controller (Best Data 56k v.90 Modem?)

Look at this ridiculous sharing! I don't like it ONE bit....

1. The Sound Card and Promise Card are sharing.
2. The TvTuner and USB Controller are sharing.

1) Move the sound card from the PCI slot to another one

2) If u don't need USB disable it in BIOS

I am using the USB for my Scanner and mouse. I could remove the mouse, but would still need the USB for my scanner. :(

My PCI Tv Tuner suffers from thise as well. The sound quality isn't all that great, and I've read that the shared IRQ is the reason why. WHy the hell does the BIo setup all the pci's with the same damn IRQs?

disable both serial/com ports. This will free up irq3. then reset/update escd in the bios , and you should be good to go ;)
