IRQ and port settings in dual boot W2K andW98.

Must all components have the same settings in both systems.
Or can, for instance, a modem be on COM1 IRQ4 when in W2K,
and be on COM2 IRQ3 when in W98.
I guess i'm asking - is it program related or mobo related.
Thanks for all comments.

Well, it is a combination of both really. If you have PnP enabled on your mobo, then all system resources would be configured by the BIOS, so in both OSes you would have the same system resource configuration. But if you have PnP disabled on your mobo, then Windows 98 and Windows 2000 have a different PnP manager. So, then you would have different systems resources. This should not effect anthing on your system.

Win98 and Win2K can and will configure resources differently, regardless of whether or not Plug+Play OS has been enabled in the BIOS.

Physically though, you won't have a modem on COM1 in one OS and COM2 on the other, since the COM1 and COM2 are two physically different ports.

If you don't need to use both serial ports on your CUSL2, then why not just disconnect the second one on the bracket and disable it in the BIOS? You save an IRQ that way....and you really need them all on the CUSL2. This way you also won't have serial ports mixed up.

Thanks guys for your comments.
Andy, This is my daughters computer with an Aopen ax6bc -bx chipset. She is installing W98 and W2K. We were finally able to install the modem in W98 - W2K installed it during installation of the OS. Now we are trying to get the printer installed - neither OS wants to cooperate 🙂
I guess you can't really separate the OS's and the mobo. I don't have com2 installed on my cusl2. Thanks again for the help. You guys are great!
Jim
