honestly I heard of both at the same time. doesnt the ipod have a long name? The the apple ipod mini?

how long is "waaaaaaaayy" to you? Apparently the name iriver (global) came out in July 2000. iRiver america was created in November 2001. The first iPod was released in October 2001.

But, of coure the iMac that started the naming craze was announced in May of 1998.
