iRiver

Can I get some pros and cons about an iRiver? I'm looking into iPod alternatives and the little 5GB version of the iRiver caught my eye.

$299 msrp for 5gb. also has a bunch if firmware bugs. Rio Carbon is a better choice. Almost no firmware bugs, gapless playback

The newest firmware fixes most all of the bugs. If you ask me, the iRiver H10 is one of the best sounding DAP's.

One of the starters of MP3 players(if not a inventor). All Pro. No Con.
N10 Rocks! That thing is one sleek looking mp3 player.

pro: looks good, color screen, has little extras like fm recording, fm radio voice recording, firmware that allows video playback, audiophile soud (sounds as good as the iPod).

con: bad user interface(windows explorer like and alphabetizes your songs), crappy fm radio, 12hr battery or less, using the firmware that allows video playback voids warranty, doesnt hold as much as it should. with 5gigs you cant hold as much photos, music, and videos, took away the dock, loading time for photos and for the player. The Bigger iRiver seems more suited for video and photo playback and also a better value i think its $300-400.

depends what you want. If you want fm radio, video playback, but messy interface then you should go for the iRiver h10, but at your price range assuming its less than 300, the iPod mini 2nd gen is a great second option(great interface 20 hr battry+, and AMAZING customer support and enormous 3rd party accessories but not as much things that come bundled in when you buy it) if you get the student discount. I think its 230 for the 6gig and 179 for the 4gig.

Cliffnotes:all in all a good but not a great product. I personally would not buy one because it costs over 200-300 for only 5 gigs(your music collection will grow exponentialy after getting an mp3 player). I would get the bigger and fatter iRiver or a similar player like the iPod photo because at 100 more you get a lot more space.

iRiver sucks. Their stuff breaks, they don't honor rebates, and they're Indian customer service reps are worthless

I think its to the point where they are just taking random words and throwing 'i' in front of it and acting like its something new.

I'd go with the h320 or h340. That drive will fill up faster than you think, considering it can be used as a portable hard drive and, with the Korean firmware, can be used to watch movies.

which model!?
that one that is oddly shapped i hear performes great and sounds awesome while the square one with the color screen is crap

 Any actual experience or just bs coming out of your ass? I've had my H120 for 2 1/2 years almost and it's taken all the abuse I've thrown at it. I've dropped it several times, once on the road, in snow, etc. Still works like a charm and looks almost new, the only cosmetic things that happened were the stickers on the back rubbing off and thats it.

Please say a brand name not just some model number.
