IRDA take off or it's a failure?

Would you say the interface of IRDA on computers and devices has taken off or not? I've noticed IRDA IS and has been on devices for many years but I'm beginning to wonder if it's being phased out or not? I've also wondered, if the IRDA interface is seemingly on all motherboard interfaces, with the pins sticking out but not hooked up, how come manufacturers haven't really gone to lengths to make a connection, docking base or what ever where one can hook up an irda device with out having to hold it?
