I was using IRC and I did a whois on myself and it knocked a bunch of people off the channel. I was wondering why that would happen?

It made me feel uncomfortable, I didn't mean to cause any problems. Does stuff like that happen often?

Oh, so that was you that kicked all the users off my server..... j/k ;)

Unless there is a bug in the ircd code, /whois'ing yourself won't crash the server or make people leave the channel. It was most likely what is called a netsplit. A netsplit is where two servers disconnect from each other either intentionally (rerouting) or unintentionally (ping timeout, etc..). There was no way you could have caused that.

Thanks for reassuring me that it wasn't my doing. I didn't think it was likely that a whois lookup would cause that, but I wanted to get more opinions on it.

Thanks again.
