Hi

I am planning on setting up a private IRC server for the use of people on a LAN. I was hoping that anybody who wanted to join the server would be able to just point mIRC to scaryjeff (my computer name), and away they would go. I am not sure if this is even possible (to have the clients connect direct to a local machine instead of via some master server), but if it is, I would be very happy to know how to do it.
I did download and try to use a windows IRC server called 'joinme', that I found on download.com, but it did not seem to be working how I wanted it to. However, the help file for this program was less than comprehensive, so perhaps I set it up incorrectly.

Thanks!

Whats the question?

When I looked into IRCds there were no good win32 versions. No stable ones at all, and of course they were pretty much limited to WinNT. Try downloading hybrid on a UNIX machine. Its been around for a while, is used by some of the biggest IRC networks on the net, and should have decent documentation.

As far as connecting to the server with a simple "/server scaryjeff" command, it should work fine if DNS is setup correctly.

Well I assume DNS is set up properly. People can access my ftp by ftp://scaryjeff and my http by http://scaryjeff. Hmm linux isn't really an option at the moment. I am just setting up my first server for our LAN and I will have enough trouble setting all that up as it is.

OK, looks like it's not really possuible to have an IRC server just now.

Thanks anyway.
