When the IGC was pressed on the issue they said that the flag would come up for popular vote at some future time. As one Iraqi was qouted as saying: "Don't they have better things to do?"

Seeing as how the old flag was a direct product of Saddam's tastes (and more of a rip-off of other groups and countries in general) I can't blame the interim government for wanting to change it - I mean, they did away with Saddam's money, this is only a logical next step.

They should ditch the crescent, for one the new iraq is supposed to be secular and having a huge islamic crescent on there doesnt seem like secularism is going to be treated seriously.
And two, Iraq has a pretty large christian minority [1,000,000] that should get atleast one stripe on the flag out of recognition, since the kurds shiites and sunnis are all getting one themselves.

You might want to look at the turkish or Israeli flag :p It would also be pretty stupid to remove something that means so much in these areas.

Why ? The crescent wasnt on the original flag.

Also both turkey and israel dont have substantial christian populations like iraq does.

No but many countries has religious symbols on their flag even though the are secular. It might also be a good idea to have something strong non-western to show they're independt of eeeehh certain other countries ;)

How bout they just not spring it on the rest of the Iraqi people as the rest of the country is going to hell. A foreign-backed un-elected government unilaterally removes the old flag and inserts one that has had no public comment or input, let alone meaning, in amongst an extreme period of insecurity and chaos, and it doesn't go over too well? No, sh1t.

the sub-title of this should have been "Can they really be that clueless"

The new Iraqi flag has not been finalized yet and will go through some revisions before becoming permanent.

A picture of the second draft has been circulating here.
