Iraqi insurgents seem to be very well armed

Take a look at this picture. This is a Dragunov sniper rifle, but what is really interesting is that it has the short 10-round magazine with armor-piercing incendiary rounds. No body armor will protect you from it. I've seen a lot of Dragunov's rifles in pictures from Iraq but most of them have the standard 30-round curved magazine.

On a side note, this guy obviously has no idea how to take cover and hold position. He's a casualty waiting to happen.

People buy guns in Iraq from vendors who buy guns from independent companies.

On a side note, who the hell cares what Iraqi insurgents do?

It is hard to tell from the photo, but it looks more like a Romanian PSL.

You cant tell what is in the magazine either...

Very true and there is no such thing as a 30 round mag for either rifle, that I know of.

Of course it wont matter what kind of gun he has if a hellfire missle or a shell from an M1-A1 Tank blows him up.

THen you must not care about our soldiers there, since they are fighting the Iraqi insurgents.

BTW, these weapons are coming from Iran, mainly and to a lesser extent, Syria.

The Dragunov is a "poor man's" sniper rifle, not particularly outstanding or accurate. Been around for 40 years and widely manufactured. It is far more likely loaded with standard militay ammo, but who can say.

Is it possible for me to get one since it isn't an automatic weapon? It's a stick that delivers death from a distence with historical value.

I've read about that rifle being used in Vietnam and other wars.

The Iraqi's are pretty well armed, but its not the line of sight weapons we are most worried about. They have proven to be pretty ineffective with them, most insugents (even those trained under Saddams army) lack basic marksmanship skills, and the mostly Russian made rifles are less accurate at the actual distance of engagement vs the M16A2, M4's, 240's 249's and .50 cals the US is using.

On the other hand, the insurgents have proven to be extremely effective with ranged weapons, mainly mortars, and to a lesser extent, rockets. A 3 man mortar team can move within range of US forces, fire off 1 or 2 rounds, and get out before they are located.

That is a Romanian PSL/FPK, not a Dragunov. It is an AK action streched for the 7.62x54R round.

The Dragunov is not meant to pick the wings off of a fly at 600m. That was never it's intended use.
For the role it is designed for, it is actually quite effective.

The US has figured this out and now has the Designated Marksman program.

Incendiary rounds? This is the first I've heard of these, are they for real? I was under the impression sniper weapons from the Soviet block mainly utilized steel-core rounds. Most likely the Mahdi army is using plain jane ammo, but then again, Tehran likes to gift others with nice toys if they're ging to be used against Americans or Jews...

They do exist. But, as you said they are likely using run of the mill steel core ammo.

What I was curious about was that the short 10-round magazines are relatively new (2002 or so) and Iraq could not have bought them openly. These are fairly recent introduction. The standard curved 30-round magazine (from the AK rifles) fits the Dragunov rifles as well and is widely available.

The Dragunov and Romanian PSL, though that looks like a PSL pictured, fire the 7.62x54R round. There is no such thing as a 30 round mag in 7.62x54R for either rifle.

The AK fires the 7.62x39 round. It's mags are not interchangeable with with the Dragunov or PSL.

There are loads of small arms all over the world. Iraq happens to be littered with them at the moment.

They are well armed because they were able to loot the Iraqi Arms Depots when the Iraqi Army disbanded and went home leaving them unguardfed. Good thing there were no WMD's because the insurgents and terrorists would have been able to loots those Depots as well.

I got a chuckle when the news media briefly started become exasperated when the US military stumbled on some weapons caches. "Holy sh1t these guys have guns! I would've never agreed to this if I knew they had guns!"
