"The Arab TV station Al-Arabiya reported that insurgents kidnapped seven Chinese north of Fallujah on Sunday evening, citing Chinese diplomatic sources. No further details were immediately available."

China is hardly concerned with individuals, be it one or a thousand. They will react in a way that it figures is in it's best interest. This was a tactic seen in Lebanon, and indeed is as old a tactic as occupations themselves.

China doesn't do a very good job at exerting their political power outside the borders of thier immediate neighbors, and not even outside their own for that matter. I'm more worried of what the Chinese will sell to the highest bidder than what they will do to intervene. There is no other country in the world that has graft so inherently carved into its culture, whether communism is enforced or not.

A small entry completely off topic: Next year, China enters the world grain market big time. Up until about four years ago, they produced a surplus. Buying grain isn't too big a deal for them because they have about a $100 Billion (with a B, as they say) trading surplus with us. That surplus is enough to buy all the U.S. grain output and that of several other countries at current prices. The price of soy beans on the world market has doubled since last year. Bottom line for people who like it simple: Watch the price of cereal and meat in the U.S.

By the way, MadRat's comment made me extremely interested in "who was that masked man?"

I was talking more along the lines of the NBC's (not the ABC's) and (missile) trajectories of Sino-political agression. The Chinese politik is a far greater gray area for the U.S. than the Soviets ever were. The Chinese have done alot to get their tentacles around the fringes of the world political movements without really being obvious as to the why they have been courting them. Its almost as if the Chinese may have been over simplistic in their approach to international politics, or they have one scary diabolical plan waiting to unleash on the world via courting the 80% of the UN that votes. Maybe they thought the West actually puts much creedence into the UN. If so, I pity them for all of their futile work.

Isn't it kind of pointless to kidnap chinese because the goverment could just lie to their population and say they are not kidnapped?

BBC reporting the same thing:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3618559.stm

The Chinese State Media reported it, so I doubt they would try to cover it up now. I'm sure the Chinese government will want to recover their people alive, though I'm not sure what they can do about it since China's huge military has a pretty short reach (nuclear missiles excepted).

The insurgents who kidnapped those Chinese nationals dont' have a very good bargaining position either - I doubt there are even any demands they could make of China.

I remember reading in Scientific American (sometime between 1997 and 1999) that China was loosing huge amounts of arable land to housing, and what grains were produced were being fed to animals because meat brought in more $$$.

Bah, they will release the Chinese once the air clears up. What are the insurgents gonna do? Force Chinese to withdraw its force from Iraq that isn't there in the first place?

This cracks me up. Run like whipped little puppies you tit sucking little faggots. Let the men step forward and take care of business.

You pound on your keyboards castigating the admistration or those opposed to it. You rail and whine, but you do cower behind the men who protect you. Crouch in fear behind the men who protect you, they won't fail you. They volunteered and have been trained to protect your pathetic fat asses.

They don't discriminate like you do. They don't think of themselves as being better because they came from families with money or they were driven by their mommies and daddies to go to college. NO, they put on the uniform to protect your pathetic lives.

I would die a thousand times over for a fellow soldier, but only once for you backseat drivers who only have hindsight to guide you.

Might be a case of mistaken identity, aka, the kidnappers may have mistaken them for Japanese or perhaps even US citizens. Or, the kidnappers may not really care if China is involved or not, they are obviously foreigners and as such maybe considered the Enemy for that reason alone.

What would they do if it totally backfired and the Chinese now send 100,000 troops in to get the kidnappers ;)
China needs OIL TOO.

UPDATE 2-China oil demand growth beats forecasts again-IEA
LONDON, April 9 (Reuters) - Chinese oil demand growth continues to surpass expectations, inflaming world crude prices now close to 13-year highs, the International Energy Agency said on Friday.

In its monthly Oil Market Report the Paris-based agency revised up its estimate of incremental Chinese oil demand in the first quarter by 180,000 bpd to a record 6.14 million bpd, an 18 percent increase from the same period last year.

"China's economy just keeps rolling and there is no imminent sign that it's going to stop," said Klaus Rehaag, head of the IEA's oil market division.

"There's a question over whether the infrastructure is there to handle these high levels of demand growth but if recent history provides any lessons there should be cautious optimism that it can continue," said Rehaag.

China's breakneck economic growth, fuelling record oil imports, is the main factor behind this year's surge in world crude prices.

Holding Chinese hostages?

I think we have some new contenders for the title of "World's Most Futile Gesture".

I hope there aren't too many Iraqi nationals tooling around in China - some of their body parts may end up in Fallujah Monday morning in a FedEx Box.
