BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 100 children held in a prison celebrated their freedom as US marines rolled into northeast Baghdad amid chaotic scenes which saw civilians loot weapons from an army compound, a US officer said.

Around 150 children spilled out of the jail after the gates were opened as a US military Humvee vehicle approached, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Padilla told an AFP correspondent travelling with the Marines 5th Regiment.

"Hundreds of kids were swarming us and kissing us," Padilla said.

"There were parents running up, so happy to have their kids back."

"The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party," he alleged. "Some of these kids had been in there for five years."

There are definitely a lot of positives in this war...

"Some of these kids had been in there for five years"

Thats just unacceptable.

oh helllll noooo. this is a war for oil and it's unjustified. we should get out of there NOW and leave the kids in prison. i mean, who really cares as long as we can sit here, enjoy our freedom and protest against a president who we still feel is illegitimate right?

THOSE KIDS WILL LEAD THE SOLDIERS TO THE OIL! IT'S STILL ABOUT OIL, DAMNIT!

Whoa. For a second there, I turned into the Iraqi Disinfo Minister. Or Morph. I have trouble separating the two these days.

Does this remind anyone else of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, with all the newly-freed children running out?

Right, did you see the picture? Did those kids look old enough to commit a crime?

what world do you live in? there are plenty of kids that age here in the states that commit crimes, just like anywhere else. the sad reality is that when a regime change happens, criminals take advantage of the situation and become political prisoners over night. i have seen it happen.

The article states why they were in there, it has nothing to do with any real crimes.

Lies!!!!!!!!

Its a well known fact that Saddam would never put innocent children in prison! Saddam is a kind and generous leader and the neo-conservative right wing media has intentionally lied and misrepresented Saddam's intentions with regard to his people.

Saddam is a peaceful ruler, it is not his fault that some of his subjects choose to resist his benevolent rule. I once overheard him say that every time he is forced into killing one of his subjects, a little piece of himself dies too. *sniff* I need a tissue.

It's unbelievable that people like you defend Saddam for brutal behavior like this. Well, we know the little buggers weren't thieves because they still had their hands!

ok, lets say that those kids refused to do whatever. kids at that age don't refuse anything, their parents usually make those decisions for them. that is why it would make more sense to put the parents in prison as punishment. the story just doesn't sound right.

Doesn't sound right to me either. Maybe Sadaam and his cronies were somehow punishing parents or keeping them in line by taking their children away, who knows.

it's quite possible. kind of naive in a schwartzenegger-movie-kind-of-way but definately possible.

I'd say its probable. What did the Nazis do to Germans who would help out Jews during WWII? Kill their children and hang em outside their houses for display. Cept in this case, the punishment is their loved ones getting imprisoned instead of killed.
