BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A crowd of angry, unemployed Iraqis threw rocks and set at least two police vehicles on fire Wednesday when they were turned away from a Baghdad police station, where they had hoped to apply for jobs.

Some of the estimated 300 job seekers told CNN's Harris Whitbeck that they arrived at the police precinct to fill out application forms but were asked for bribes and ordered away from the station.

Asked for bribes? I figured the Police could use all the help they could get, but they're resorting to asking for bribes? Sounds like the princpiles of Saddam regime are still in tact.

I don't think you are going to find ANY 3rd world country where the police aren't on the take and institutionally corrupt.

Can't argue with that, corruption is everywhere- but isn't this situation extreme? It's like if people wanted to apply for police jobs during the LA riots and they were told to cough up some bribe money. Dosen't Iraq NEED police officers badly?

No it really isn't extreme. It is common practice around the 3rd world to have to pay a bribe to get a government job. You can't compare it in any way to the US.
