First, I'd like to thank the Mods for a 'Sticky'
 ------------------------------------------------------------

I have been asked to remove some information for now.

There is an 8 hour time difference from Eastern USA time to Iraq.
12:00 Noon is 8:00 PM (2000 HRS Military Time) over there.

Participate if you wish - support your troops in Iraq.

Some of you may know, while others may not - my son is returning to Iraq for another deployment.

It's been quite a ride since the middle of July, when he was sent to Fort Hood.

We've gone through the pleasure of having him as close as a 2 1/2 hour drive from where we live.
He's had the chance to visit on weekends when time and training breaks allowed him to join us for some quality family time.

He is among the first soldiers to receive the face and head guard protection equipment.

Anyway - he spent this last Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with us and we celebrated his Birthday.

His sister sent him a Portable DVD for him to take along

We had him bring along a couple of his friends to visit with us, and had a Pre-Thanksgiving Turkey dinner on Friday evening,
and a traditional breakfast for Saturday Morning.

Which brings us to this:

Chris has said that he may be able to provide me a list of 'Pen Pal' Soldiers if anyone wishes to send along their words of encouragement and support -
just a little note from supporters at home, goes a long way in re-inforcing good will and morale when you're in the boondocks.

I'll be sending letters and goodies monthly to Chris & his Battle Buddies.

You'll have to PM me if you wish to write any of them.

Good post!!!

Good to see you are supportive of your son! It's a bitch being separated from the comforts of life. It's harder if your family doesn't support you.

I for one have great support every mission that I go on. It wasn't always like that though. In my previous marriage, she didn't do very well at support, and it was literally hell on earth.

I hope your son can relax about things back home. It sure makes the time fly a lot faster.

Keep the thread going.

It won't be long before I'm posting pictures of myself in a similar situation. I'm supposed to go over sometime this Spring. The sooner, the better!

Good post!

FYI, Jeffrey Wade (JWADE) in Afghanistan had a FS/FT thread a couple of months ago collecting parts to build PCs for the off-duty area of his firebase. AT folks got him the parts to build 17 PCs plus more parts he turned over to another guy there.

If your son & his friends are somewhere with nothing to do off-duty but with decent power, you might consider starting a new thread. People have consoles, games, PC parts, books, music CDs, DVDs, etc. they could ship, though it's about $2/LB to ship so it should be things they can really use. Some AT Santas might also be able help with items or cash to fill specific requests for the guys/gals with families that can't send much.

They're supposed to have access to an 'Internet Cafe' type facility in their encampment.
I'll get hime to advise me of what they have - or don't have.

I probably have enough parts to put together 2 or 3 of the K7, Pentium II, or maybe even a P3 from a collection of Motherboards,
CPU's, PC 100 & PC 133 Memory Sticks.
I also have a bunch of sound cards, NICs and modems . . . but no cases.
If they could use a 'Puter or two, we might collectively be able to jointly assemble a few units and ship them as donations to the cause . . .

. . . cause they need them . . . and the computer's being left to the next rotation group.
Computer time and access is in short supply and high demand.
Last time he had a 1 hour use limit, and only had access to a computer 2 times a week.

Excellent thread. I hope your son stays safe and returns home ASAP. My little brother is scheduled to leave for Iraq at some point(he's at Ft. Riley now) but the date keeps changing.

Luckily my wife and I got to spend a considerable amount of time with him before he left for KS. We lived in Auburn, AL and my brother as at Benning for IOBC, Mortar Leaders, Airborne and Ranger schools. On the weekends, our apartment looked like a halfway house for lost 2nd Lts...those guys were a riot to tailgate with before Auburn football games. :)
