Iraq, "Behind the Failure"

An insightful piece by EJ Dionne of the Washington Post on an administration whose foreign policy is based on lies, misinformation and cooked intelligence. With a valid suggestion on what they need to do to fix the mess they've created.

Behind the Failure

Excerpts:

"Perhaps even more disturbing than the administration's indifference to the truth or falsity of the various claims it made before the war is the fact that it seemed to believe its own propaganda."

"The vice president said he knew this because he and the president had met with "various groups and individuals, people who have devoted their lives from the outside to trying to change things inside Iraq. . . . The read we get on the people of Iraq is there is no question but what they want to get rid of Saddam Hussein and they will welcome as liberators the United States when we come to do that."

Please look at those sentences again. Note that for its reading of the situation inside Iraq, the administration relied on people who spent their lives outside Iraq. The administration believed the outsiders because the outsiders said what the administration wanted to hear -- and perhaps because the administration had no clue as to how people inside Iraq might react."

"It's now clear that the courageous 139,000 American troops in Iraq are insufficient to guarantee security -- including their own. Shinseki was right. Wolfowitz and Cheney were wrong. Will Wolfowitz and Cheney ever apologize to Shinseki?

And consider our president's statement on July 2 in response to a question about attackers targeting our troops. "Bring 'em on," our president declared. "We've got the force necessary to deal with the security situation." Mr. President, they're bringing it on."

"Now that we have invaded Iraq, we cannot afford to let the place go to pieces. The administration can hold fast to its arrogance. Or it can acknowledge its mistakes and chart a new course."

The name of the forum, galt, is Politics and News.

What part of Politics and News don't you understand?

Breaking news on CNN.

Japan is delaying the deployment of troops to Iraq for "several months" in the wake of the bombing of the UN headquarters there.

France is dismissing the Bush administration's demand for help in Iraq saying any troop deployment must be made by UN resolution.

Good. Make Bush play by the rules. He stole the election in the USA and thinks he's the ruler of the world.

He stole the election? Sorry according to our stupid electorial system he did infact win. I hope it is changed by next election it. I also did read a article on how our voting system is flawed which was posted in these forums a while back. I totally agree with it. The US is infact the largest superpower in the globe and the fact is you can't do anything about it. As for Japan delaying their troops, WTF? As far as I am concerned I don't believe Iraqi rebels aren't going to shoot at them and just target British/US troops. Beyond this they did target the UN building NOT the US Embassy. BOBDN if you think a force like the one in Iraq can drive us out your are insanely stupid.

Let it go, Tabb :) He learns to think by reading the NY Times and, like their journalists, 'cutting and pasting' the same, tired rhetoric day after day. Let him have his fun...hey, BOOBDN, post those quotes again!

There are many Americans who will never call Bush their president. I agree with your assessment of our electoral system and hope for its repair although I believe it is in the state it's in not by accident but by design.

As for your statement on my sanity and intellect please rethink it. I never said the US would be driven out. I said the Bush administration is slowly coming to the realization, one they will not admit to, that they need international assistance to clean up the mess they've created in Iraq. Their only other option is to be mired in Iraq for years.

I will say that I believe without international help we will be in roughly the same position after several years in Iraq we found ourselves in in Viet Nam. A no win. And all totally unnecessary.

That comment illustrates the extent of your political understanding.

I know, your posts contribute your amount of pride and loyality to the US.

My pride and loyalty to the US are unquestionable.

For your information loyalty to Bush does NOT equal loyalty to America. He is a draft dodging, alcoholic, drug using smarmy rich kid who never took responsibility for anything in his life. You can follow him if you like but don't equate that with loyalty or pride in America.

You lessen the patriotism of every American by using the likes of Bush as your standard.

Your ability to follow Bush like a lemming into the sea does not equal pride and loyatly to the US. It is no more than blind allegiance to a leader who lied to America to invade Iraq and is now leading an administration which is handing out billions of dollars in contracts there to its friends. What a disgrace.

Sounds like Iraq.
