I guess even 20+ year verterans take a mind dump. Just guessing but maybe he saw his CO on the ground and just acted without thinking in an efort to save his life.

Those da*n M4s. Great for close in, but sure won't put a man down very quickly.

thats what training is for, to act when you can't think.

He was out of rounds and didn't feel like he could reload before the terrorist could. Therefore he dropped his rifle to go hand-to-hand.

A captain buddy of mine outta San Diego was basically the mayor of Fallujah for a few days. Needless to say we was not well-liked by the local goons. Eventually he took 60+ pieces of shrap to his legs, as well as 2 or 3 shots to his kevlar chest, and returned medical after 8 months. Now he's in recruiting... He's got some hard core stories man.

Congrats on your commision datalink7. I am also going Army OCS in Feb...

What? Don't these guys play counterstrike? At least go for your sidearm and if you run out of clips for that, drop down to your combat knife. WTF, hand to hand?

one more time, never ever ever ever drop your weapon. I don't care if its broken and can't fire at all.

Doesn't the Army teach the basic butt stroke? An empty rifle can kill someone a lot faster than your bare hands can.

Marines pretty much have this basic rule beaten into thier heads. You'd have a hard time pulling a rifle away from me when i'm sound asleep.

Perhaps swinging a rifle while diving through a doorway wasn't a feasible course of action.

Neither of us were there, so I'm going to guess that someone who has 20+ years in the military made what he felt was the correct decision.

Congrats also on your commissioning. I retired after 22 years, major.

I too won't second guess the NCO on dropping his weapon, but everything I've been taught says that is the last thing you want to do if at all possible.
