Iraq: 51st State

Seems like the best solution to the problems in Iraq would be to let the people there vote for Iraq to become the 51st state in the USA. I don't know if the majority of the Iraqi people would want to be part of the USA, but it seems like their lives would begin to improve if they did. The downside would be a backlash from the rest of the Arab world accusing the USA of taking Iraq by force.

The three clever Iraqi citizens that would actually vote for this measure would all be lynched by their own people, until they explained that they just wanted US citizenship so they could come to the US and blow something up.

More seriously, what on earth would the Iraqis gain from this, completely setting aside that there's almost no benefit to the United States?

Oh joy, they could pay our taxes!

This is kind of like if we had made the Phillipines a US State a hundred years ago (and no, that was never a serious possibility). But there's really nothing to gain for anyone on either side.

Much easier to kill them all and take the oil. If we make them a state all the maimed and mangled from our thousands and thousands of bombs will be entitled to disability.

Why? We barely help the citizens of existing states. Who cares about people going without medical care while working full time in the U.S. when we can spend billions starting "preemptive" wars?

Me and the Carlyle group see that spending billions quite differently.

Costa Rica, Guam, and the Phillipines would become US states LONG before Iraq.

Sorry to chime in ... but the Philippines will never be a State of the USA ...

Get real! This will happen as soon as Daffy Duck starts flying Goofy around on his back.

And Iraq will?

PS: I thought Israel was already the 51st state 😉

Yes Iraq will be the Xth state. (Insert any Latin American country / Israel here) is already the (X-1)th state.

as a general rule, nations don't like annexing soil that is not part of their contiguous land. so no, iraq will not become a US state.

Hmmm...Canada should be worried if Bush is re-elected! 😀 😉

"I don't know if the majority of the Iraqi people would want to be part of the USA, but it seems like their lives would begin to improve if they did."
I think the Iraqi people have ZERO interest in becoming part of our country. Do you know that they have a radically different religion? Did you know they have a very long history that goes far beyond ours? Did you know that they hate us because of our support of israel and mainly because of the invasion of their country? Did you know 10,000 Iraqis have died because of this war based on false pretenses? Did you know we have thrown their country into turmoil? Did you know we have tortured their citizens in our jail? The reason I'm asking is because if you knew most of these facts it would be glaringly apparent that they have no interest in becoming part fo the US.

Your suggestion is completely absurd. I recommend you read more about the middle east, Arab history, and Islam.

This could be a joke, but then again Cadkindoflife often seems to be joking but is really not.

Infohawk, I would agree that Iraqis probably don't have a lot of interest in making Iraq a US state, but I wouldn't completely rule it out.

"Do you know that they have a radically different religion?"
Yes most Iraqis are Muslim, but the USA has freedom of religion, and some Muslims do live here.

"Did you know they have a very long history that goes far beyond ours?"
Iraq is not a continuation of ancient Babylon just like the USA is not a continuation of Native American tribes

"Did you know that they hate us because of our support of israel and mainly because of the invasion of their country?"
I wouldn't agree that they hate the USA. From what I see, they hate the instability in Iraq the USA caused by removing Saddam. Iraq joining the USA would help to bring back stability.

"Did you know 10,000 Iraqis have died because of this war based on false pretenses? Did you know we have thrown their country into turmoil?"
The people in Iraq were in turmoil and dying BEFORE the war because of Saddam, which the USA eliminated. At least now they have a chance at a better life.

"Did you know we have tortured their citizens in our jail?"
The mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners was unacceptable behavior, but they would have gotten even worse treatment under Saddam.

Fsck that, I don't want that sh!thole to be part of America. I like the Iraqi's about as much as they like us..which isn't very much!

i read an article that iraq is rampant with pirating - satellite feeds, movies, music, etc...
dont think your average iraqi would want to be subpeonaed by the riaa or the mpaa! i think they'd turn it down.
