Not surprised. I knew either the Russians or the Chinese would attempt to block it.

And now the ball starts rolling.

As predicted, Iran will attempt to build nuclear weapons.

Step 2: What's Israel going to do about it?

But don't forget, we got Iraq, a country with no WMD, all wound around our tiny finger. We should not fret none

Iran is eager to step up trade with China. It signed a preliminary agreement for the export of gas to China for 25 years. It also has offered China a concession to develop oil and gas fields in the Persian Gulf.

Those crazy commies

I don't think Iran will get nukes. It's possible to put immense pressures on Iran, including some carrots and credible threat of military force, and a way out for them without humiliation, and have a best case scenario outcome.

Of course they are serial liars. If this failed, I could easily see surgical airstrikes or even a considerable air campiagn to eliminate the programs. I think there's a 50-50 chance of the use of force.

Maybe we would have more credibility asking Iran to disarm if we asked the religious state of Israel to disarm too?

I don't think Iran has nuclear weapons yet. its only trying to build them. We're trying to stop them from making them. Israel already has them.

Yeah, I guess I didn't really mean "disarm." But the general message stands. You can't ask Iran not to have nukes but have a blind eye to Israel.

Israel has had nukes for over 20yrs, yet Iran didn't start to ramp up their weapons program until the US invaded Iraq.

on the contrary, they had a nuclear program for a while. It was only after the Libyans gave up and the Pakistani head nuclear scientist confessed did the world realize the full extent of Iran's nuclear weapons program and the black market dealings that supplied it.

we always will seem to favor someone. Like Pakistan and India, two religious states that developed nukes, I seem to recall that we only initiated sanctions on Pakistan and not India.

I never said they didn't have a nuclear program. What I said was that they are ramping it up now.

i don't think that was on the chinese' minds at all.

the only thing on the chinese' minds was all the oil they would have access to in exchange for a security council veto.

what do the chinese care, it isn't like they'd be the ones targeted by iran's nuclear program.

oh ok, but I think they're ramping it up now because they've been exposed and are stalling in negotiations till they actually finish, not because of the war in Iraq.

I am talking in a normative sense rather than a positive one. If we want credibility, we should have very good reasons for favoring some nations over others, especially when it comes to super-important issues like nuclear proliferation.

US did initiate sanctions on India at first but they were later lifted....

but your right.. US does land up favoring a country and being a Hypocrate ( no offense to the americans ofcourse ) ..... On one hand, bush is supporting Israel with its nuclear weapons and then on the other, he wants to rid this world of "WMD" .. talk about hypocracy..

We can only hope. That ought to shut Bush the hell up about this "Axis of Evil" BS.

Then he'll be forced to play his political games on an international level.

More important question is if China would back Iran against a war with israel/US?
China alone has a military reserve pool of all 3 countries population combined.
I dont think its too far fetched considering the US invaded a country with the second largest reserves of oil.

doubt it...

Russia has provided many military items to Iran .. mainly SAMs to protect thier nuclear interests
North Korea sells missiles to Syria and others
China desperately needs all the Oil and natural Gas they can get
Pakistan created the middle east nuclear problem

Keep doubting

India is a secular state.
