not in the Straight of Horitz. Superior navy of the US gets nullified as the space is limited and its close to the land which means its in missile range. US ran a simulation and found that they would loose over a 1000 men in under a hour if they would try to unblock it from Iran.

I could see our ships taking some hits from missiles but Iran would get it 100x worse. It would give us an excuse to blow up whatever we wanted. Despite our recent nation building failures and half successes we still have enough toys to really ruin your day.

IMO Iran attempting to actually close the straights is the dumbest thing they could do because it guarantees significant US airstrikes on anything that might be nuclear related and on any military target.

The U.S. Federal government has been the aggressor in every war it's been in except it's own revolution. It even performed or threatened acts of war against the people of Rhode Island FFS.

Your comment shows your total lack of any sort of brain matter.
In fact you have no clue what it takes to win a war....
Often the aggressor wins...or lets be blunt the side that is the most aggressive usually wins.
The war we did not win we were out aggressed!!

China will just cut credit to America and people should know not to buy war bonds by now.

This country is fucked beyond repair and I'm going from ambivalence to being ashamed to consider myself an American (especially after the vast majority cheered when they were told Bin Laden was killed). The U.S. Federal government has been the aggressor in every war it's been in except it's own revolution. It even performed or threatened acts of war against the people of Rhode Island FFS.

How? They can sink your ships from dry land.

U.S. carrier crosses Hormuz amid rising Gulf tensions

Tuesday aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln -- part of the Bahrain-based U.S. Fifth Fleet -- sailed through the strait of Hormuz with the Cape St George destroyer cruising behind.

It is not closed yet. It is a shipping lane so that is no suprise it went through without incident as it was on its way to support NATO opperations in Afghanistan

Realize that any missile shots from dry land will cause those launch sites to be closed permanently. One shot deals. They will need good accuracy for a 20 mile shot against anything but a tanker.

Every fixed launch site has been identified and is in multiple targeting systems.
It is the suicide boats that will be the biggest thorn to a naval screen.

Iran stated a few months ago that they would not allow a carrier back through the straights. Twice since then their bluff has been called.

As long as we don't try another one of these occupy nation building bullshit escapades, everything will work out fine. Right now, we have no diplomatic ties to Iran, and no economic ties other than their output to the world oil market. They launch an attack somewhere, we take out their airfields, their nuclear facilities, and any launch sites that they have. Then we go home. Now they are no longer a nuclear threat, their country is not destroyed, they still have their oil fields and refineries, and we continue...not having economic or diplomatic ties with them.

So basically, everything is the same as it is now only they're no longer a threat. Sounds like a perfect plan to me.

The posturing has already begun...

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN – A U.S. aircraft carrier sailing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz had a close encounter with an Iranian vessel Tuesday.

The Iranian navy patrol boat came within two miles of the USS Abraham Lincoln, part of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, as it sailed through the strait with the destroyer Cape St. George and a guided missile cruiser.

The Iranian military came out for a look at the ships, first sending a reconnaissance flight and then sending the Iranian patrol boat.

The commander of the USS Abraham Lincoln, Capt. John Alexander, said such close encounters “could eventually lead to a fatal miscalculation.”

“They have the ability to take a shot at me at some point, and I worry about it,” Alexander told NBC News.

Because of strong U.S. sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program, Iran has threatened to shut down the strait and attack U.S. warships. Oil tankers carry a fifth of the world's oil supply through the strait, only about 30 miles across at its narrowest point.

Iran has also amassed Revolutionary Guard fast boats, submarines and, along the shoreline, anti-ship cruise missiles.

Vice Admiral Mark Fox, commander of the 5th Fleet, said, “We’re ready today. This is the world we live in.”

Fox said Sunday that Iran had built up its naval forces in the Gulf and prepared boats that could be used in suicide attacks, but the U.S. Navy could prevent it from blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet always has at least one supercarrier at sea accompanied by scores of jets and a fleet of frigates and destroyers.

I am sure that there was a destroyer keeping very close eye between the boat and the carrier. And a few Hornets were doing a low level CAP just in case the Patrol boat cleared the screening destroyer.

Iran was seeing what the defensive posture would be of the battle group at the most vulnerable point

Iran is playing a very dangerous game. Navy captains take the safety of their ships very seriously and are likely to err on the side of their safety. I don't see what they think they can gain from this. Looks like it's just egos at play.

But at the same time, the Captain knows that the Iranian boat is 'testing' the Navy to see what the reaction times, patterns, etc are being used, so they don't want to show their hand every time one of these little boats approach the battle group...

edit: Missed your last sentence EK...my bad...

Agreed! They love to beat their chests and do a lot of talking, but they wont do shit! Just like they threatened something might be done if a carrier group returned. The Stennis returned and there wasnt a peep out of them. They will [insert]attempt to[/insert] defend themselves if attacked obviously.

Fixed.
