Iran may start a war with Israel

Iran would be willing to send its Revolutionary Guard members to accompany further aid ships to Gaza, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday in an interview cited by Reuters.

"The naval wing of the Revolutionary Guard is ready to assist the peace flotilla to Gaza with all its effort and capabilities," Khamenei's Revolutionary Guard spokesman Ali Shirazi stated.

"If the Supreme Leader issues an order for this then the Revolutionary Guard naval forces will do their best to secure the ships," Shirazi said. "It is Iran's duty to defend the innocent people of Gaza."

Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad termed the IDF raid on the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara as "barbaric" and called for dismantling of “the Zionist regime.”

Ahmadinejad was speaking to a crowd of tens of thousands, many of them chanting anti-Israeli slogans, gathered at the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini for a ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of his death.

oh and there are QUOTES by Iranian leaders. call biased, call, whatever you want, but quotes are quotes. AND those quotes come from Reuters.

Iran may start a war with israel by sending their navy into israeli waters. I will like to see the Iranian apologists defend iran after they commit an act of war.

We can all basically assume, with the tension between iran and israel, that if iran enters israeli waters, there will be a battle.

why shouldn't it?

after all, they're only trying to help the starving gazan's from israel's suffocating blockade.

israel has gotten so damn good at stifling the flow of rockets and destroying missile launch sites without incurring casualties (something used as propaganda to attack israel) that now it makes sense to challenge it directly.

whose going to stop it?

the UN? please.

european union won't do shit, and when israel shows up they'll call for a cease-fire and the media will say israel baited iran into a war, as israel baited the arabs into 6 decades of land-grabbing aggression.

as covered in other threads, there doesn't seem to be any practical way for Iran to send its ships into Israeli waters and doing so would be potentially provoking a war with the USA, which I can't imagine Iran would want to be.

a stronger possibility is that the Iranian leaders want some press to boost their image.

i'd honestly like to see Iran get raped by the world in a war, they would be seen as the aggressors

Israel has really stirred the pot on this one, I think for as many people that hate Iran, there's an equal amount of people that despise Israel.

We forget that the Iranian government is fighting for survival and one thing that governments on the brink like to do is start wars with neighbors to stir up nationalism and hide their internal problems.

Are you kidding? Obama has no spine. Or more likely, he has a spine and will use it to not go to war over Israel.

If the Supreme leader issues an order... He won't.

Nice misattribution by the JPost wrt Khamenei, btw...

It'd be interesting, that's for sure, considering that Israel boarded the ships in international waters, anyway, and that they somehow claim Gaza is and isn't an independent State, all at the same time...

It's all just posturing and bluster, anyway, on all sides...

That's a good point.
But I might add, that's all the more reason not to give them uranium nuclear power plans.
Give them Thorium reactors sure. But not uranium. They want the uranium for bombs.

That's true of Israel, too, has been for 60 years...

frankly i think EVERYONE in the area has been looking for a excuse to go to war.

And Obama made it feasible by ignoring Iran's threat while forcing Israel into vulnerability thus stoking the larceny in the hearts of the maniacs. Disaster.

All talk. I don't think the Ayatollah is that stupid.

But I kind of hope he is. The Iranian regime is in dire need of an ass-kicking.

Doubtful.

Which country just recently invaded a ship in international waters? Israel.

Israel is fighting for it's survival from those intent to destroy it from outside. The Iranian govt. has lost it's credibility with it's own people with the recent sham elections and is trying to deflect attention. I suspect the Turkish Islamic Govt. has put on this show for similar reasons. So there's a big difference.

As an aside, the Mullahs are learning quickly from North Korea: nukes are good for self-preservation and perpetuation of their mullohcracy. If NK is not attacked despite it's brazen provocations like sinking a South Korean ship, the presumption is it's because of it's nukes. Countries like Iran, Syria, Myanmar and other countries with non-representative governments are either seeking nukes precisely because of this. Pakistan is expanding it's nuke count for the same reason.

These are interesting times.

Even if Iran were truly willing to do this, I doubt they would find any peace activists willing to be escorted by them. Not only would it be a hypocritical act to take a ship full of peaceful supplies, knowingly, into a military conflict, but they would also have to deal with the fact that theirs boats would likely be sunk in the ensuing battle.

Peace activists bringing supplies want to... bring supplies, not die.

This is true. They would be totally destroyed and their nuclear efforts put back many years, but our forces would be stretched even thinner. The U.S. brings everything it has into a war, and we are already using a lot of our resources. Plus, it would only plunge us further into debt. It seems as if the U.S. could eventually die by being in never-ending wars against huge populations.
