WASHINGTON, June 4 (AFP): Pakistani nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan told US media Tuesday that he was not responsible for passing nuclear secrets to Iran and Libya. In an interview with the McClatchy news organization in Pakistan, Dr. Khan said he introduced Tripoli and Tehran to western businesses who provided the know-how on building a nuclear weapons program. He said he had merely given Iran and Libya ?very small advice? on where to acquire the technology. ?When Iran and Libya wanted to do their program, they asked our advice. We said: 'OK, these are the suppliers, who provide all.'? Dr. Khan said the companies that provided the technology to the two regimes were European. ?The Germans have those drawings. The South Africans have those drawings. The French have those drawings. They were the suppliers. You can't blame me for it. They were selling. They were making money. Why put blame on me?? Dr. Khan said during the interview from his residence in Islamabad, where he remains under house arrest. He said nuclear secrets obtained by North Korea came from Russia. ?All the North Korean scientists and engineers studied in Russia,? Khan said, describing Pyongyang's program as having ?excellent technology? with ?very sophisticated designs.? Dr. Khan complained that accomplices in Pakistan had gotten away ?scot-free? while he had become a ?black sheep? for offering advice on nuclear weaponry. (Posted @ 09:15 PST)

So how about the US and UN rid themselves of double standards and start threatening the EU and Russia with sanctions? Too bad the most powerful people in the world are gross hypocrites picking on the weak. I bet this won't even get half the attention and flak Pakistan got for giving away its nuclear secrets and only because these other "rogue" states are far too powerful and rich people would have more to lose from taking a tougher stance against them in the short term. Sad state of affairs.

Iran is a signatory to the NPT (as are most EU countries and the US), and by the terms of the treaty MUST be provided assistance in in the development of peaceful nuclear technology and industry. Or, and BTW, by the same treaty the US, Russia, China, etc, should have gotten rid of their nuclear weapons. So you were saying something about "double standards"?

The claim that nations on the UN Security Council are the ones arming the rogue nations with nuclear technology might very well be the reason those same nations use their power/authority to provide cover and protection to those rogues against our interests.

In chess the pawns go first.

It sounds like he is admitting that other Pakistani scientists were involved in the transfer.
And he is also, just complaining that he was the one that was caught.

Exactly what I was going to ask. Why should we believe Khan? Why does TGB believe him?

The 'know-how' and 'secrets' are known or can be obtained by almost any PhD level physicist or chemist. It's the materials that's the problem. Maybe he blames text books written by Europeans?

The joke in this story is Musharaff claiming that the Pakistani Army top brass did not "know" about A.Q.Khan's clandestine dealings when he was outed! And these guys kept a lot of the nuclear program off-limits to even the elected Prime-Minister.
