"All volunteers have been instructed to assist the development of purely political and democratic programs through exclusively peaceful means."

It added that "volunteers must not engage in any other activities whatsoever," a phrase which is being interpreted as referring to alleged criminal activity.

The statement said the IRA had authorized a representative to work with the Independent International Commission of Decommissioning (IIDC) to complete the process of putting weapons beyond use.

There was "very strong support" among IRA volunteers for Sinn Fein's peace strategy, the statement said, but added there was widespread concern about the "failure" of the British and Irish governments and unionists to "fully engage in the peace process".
If nothing else the IRA conflict in northern Ireland is a perfect example of why terrorism and violence don't work. The bloodshet only made the hate and anger stronger, it only made the british presence stronger and it resulted in the detention abuse and killing of many many people. It's unfortunate that certain ethnic groups in the middle east don't take the example of one of the most brilliant political activists in history from their area, Ghandi. Politically inspired violence is only a path to more violence and interweaving religion in it only makes it worse and more intense.

Actually, violence does work. Take the example of the Jewish campaign against the british as an example.

Also, Gandhi was not from the Middle East, he was from India. India is not in the Middle East.
