My co-worker and I were having a conversation the other day. He says the IQ drops once you go south of the Mason-Dixon line. I agreed, im ignorant, he isnt. Is this true?

Im talking about the Deep South, not Florida or the Bahamas dude. The deep South. The Dirty South. You must be from either Texas, Arkanasa or Alabama. You are proving my point

I beg to differ, as I'm hoping other high-IQ southerners on this board will.
I'd say in general its about the same, having lived in both florida and massachusetts.

Good Point. Florida is not too bad. I lived in Boston myself

Highly doubtful and any statistically significant and proven drop is probably a result of cultural differences in the testing, as opposed to a real drop in raw intelligence.

I'm in Alabama and as such bring the state average up markedly :D

A statement so based on assumptions and hubris that it's impossible to refute.

I once worked with a typical "country boy" who, at first encounter, seemed like a simpleton. He and I became friends, and what he lacked in culture and experience he made up for in raw intelligence. The man had a 154 IQ and was extremely intelligent.

Intelligence isn't based on education, and unfortunately many southerners are lacking in the latter.

Alabama may not have the book-smarts... but I bet a higher-percentage of people can restore an antique camaro... or at least partially restore five of them.
The south is way better because northerners tend to be way more "forward" (jerks).

Knowledge (how to restore a camaro) has little to do with intelligence.

It was a joke. learn your stereotypes buddy... but I do know people who are very mechanically inclined and aren't intelligent by IQ standards. And vice versa. Its hard to qualify intelligence.

strange assertion. I've met lots of immensely intelligent southerners. There's certainly a culture difference (between, for example, new york and new orleans), but it seems to go both ways-

Southerners are just as smart as the rest of the country, but the only people ever talked about is the below average.

What about Huntsville?

We might act slower but it is because we are more laid back not because of iq.

Before you think some farm boy isn't smart because he can't build a computer, try rebuilding and tuning a carburator. And then try and get your mom to do either.

You know it may surprise everyone here but last I heard alabama as a whole scored ABOVE the national average on SATs. Everyone in the US (including alabamians) seem to think they are bottom rung, but that number claims otherwise. No I don't have a source.

I wouldn't be surprised it it did drop, but IQ tests are pretty meaningless in the first place. What it probably is measuring is due to a lower quality of public education. While some teachers are in it for the sake of teaching and really enjoy that profession, you're not going to lure a lot of highly qualified math and science teachers into your high schools with a salary of 18-24K per year. If the educational systems were improved in those states, then you probably wouldn't see any IQ drop at all. That would take a lot of time and a lot of money.

The people are as smart as anywhere else.
...in GA, we just have sh!t for public education, and to top that off, georgia at leats has everyone taking SATs, causing the average scores to be lower than what they represent for many other states.

On top of that, you yankee folk are just strange :). Y'all got nasal voices, and call coca-cola pop for God's sake!

1. Typically intelligence is based upon solving problems and using logic. Having a better school based education will help, as it (IQ tests and SATs) is a standardized test. It won't make much difference as to what you can actually do, but makes a difference on the tests.
In addition, as I stated, you yankees are crazy folks! :p
2. the RPGer in me wants to say that Knowledge (how to restore a comaro) is modified by intelligence, so does have quite a bit to do with it :D.

I'm a half-breed, BTW. Father from middle GA, me born in middle GA, mother from NY and half the family up there. Cold, snow...yecch.

I don't think education plays a signifigant role in average IQ. IQ tests are supposed to measure brute cognitive power, and require very little understanding of formal math (other than basic principles like prime numbers, squares, and so forth). There is of course an issue with familiarity of standardized tests, but dedicated teachers are not a prerequisite for scoring high.
