Any difference in this day and age?
My 5850 still exhibits the hardware filtering defect.
Other than that I always felt colors were a bit better on it.
 
I jumped from 5850 CFX, to 570 SLI and now to 7950 CFX. Didn't see any worthwhile differences on either.

OK I am just an end user, not a pro but that's what it feels to me over the past 5 years and I do test most games on all rigs.
 
I owned 5800 series and yes I noticed its hardware filtering issues too. Current cards from both camps dont have this issue. In general I think AMD colours are slightly more vibrant out of the box, but Nvidias are more accurate. Both can be tweaked to your liking so its a non-issue.
 
Both should be pretty much identical.
For old games nvidia has slight edge as it allows AA up till 32xSSAA. (If you can get any game working decently with that.. 😉)
