IPX/SPX NT4 and WIN98 local network question...

I set up a local IPX/SPX network for 2 WIN98 and 1 NT4 workstation machines... I can see the NT4 machine from the WIN98 machine but not the WIN98 machine from the NT4 machine. I also cannot access the NT4 machine's shared folders from the WIN98 machines. Do I (the logged on ADMIN user for the NT4 machine) need to setup a user account for the WIN98 machines so that they can read/share files from the shared folders of the NT4 machine? Do the WIN98 machines need NETBIOS enabled for the IPX/SPX protocol since the NT4 has it enabled? What do I need to do to set this up? The reason I don't setup a local TCP/IP network is that two of the machines are connected through the same 4 port HUB and NIC's to the internet by an uplink to a cable modem with two IP addresses. Thanks.
 
Micro$louth included the IPX/SPX to support Netware networks. It isn't used on a microsoft network. Consider using the NetBuie (spelling) protocal since both of your machines are using windows based OSes. I haven't used NT4 since I'm running win2000 but I think you're right when you say you need to sign in as an administrator on your nt4 computer and set up a user for you win98 computer. NT will not anyone who doesn't have permission to access it and if you haven't set up the permissions, your win98 ain't going to even be allowed to peek into your nt4 system 🙂

I don't presume I'm a network guru, just do it cuz i like it so anyone feel free to correct me at will 🙂

IPX/SPX is not the ideal protocol for your situation. Netbeui would be a better choice by far. NT maintains USER-Level security ONLY so you must log on to your win98 box as a user that is also on the NT 4 box. It would be OK for this user to be Administrator, but you can make another. Make sure you sign on to win98 with a username and password that are ALSO valid on the NT box. Make sure you have the MS client for networks and the MS file and print sharing loaded on both machines and it should work.

I'd recommend to the later. Win98 is easily hacked into though I personally don't know how. If you allow administer privileges for you win98 login username/password, anyone who has hacked into it has full access to your win nt system. And you're on a cable (always on) connection, so you gotta be alittle more concern regarding network security 🙂
