I used to have a tiny network in my house (years ago), and I used IPX/SPX to run the file and printer sharing using Windows 98. I used this because I know for sure that IPX/SPX packets will NOT survive a trip to the local ISP. This means that there is absolutely NO WAY for anybody to hack into my file shares, since file sharing was not even bound to TCP/IP.
Now, I have a WinXP Pro machine, and want to do the same thing. The problem is that I have not been able to so far. Is it possible? My network now consists of a new XP-Pro machine and the old 98SE machine.
I tried poking around XP networking, but it is sufficiently different from 98 that I cannot figure out how to do it.
BTW: I do have a hardware firewall, and I use Zone Alarm. But I would still rather not open up file sharing over TCP/IP if I can help it.
