IPTV latency effect on PC ONLINE GAMING

Hello guys,

I play CounterStrike Source with below 100ms ping time latency. My service provider Earthlink-TimeWarner high speed cable yields about 1776.2 kbps using the CNET bandwidth measurement (sometimes 2100 kbps).

My dad wants to add an IPTV box (to be connected to the router). This IPTV that he's looking to order requires 800 kbps.

My question is .. will it screw up my CounterStrike ping time latency ? and thereby getting kicked out of my favorite servers (filtered to <100ms).

Thanks for your kind help.

bandwidth and latency are not always dependent on each other. You can have a high bandwidth line with high latency, or a low bandwidth line with low latency. you do add latency as you fill your bandwidth though...so they are connected. I doubt the box uses 800kb/s all the time, probably only when watching TV (and then it will probably just peak at that). That should leave you with 1000kb/s (more then half) for games. Shouldn't push you ping up much I would think, but there is only one way to find out....

hello mate :) Thanks for replying :)
Yea I'm bit scared cuz if the box arrives and get connected to my router .. my ping latency might go beyond 100ms and therefore get kicked-out of my favorite online games (counterstrike source, black hawk down, etc, soldier of fortune2, battlefield2, etc etc).

And the thing is i'm on the computer almost 16 hours a day, and my dad just retired so he's gonna be watching the IPTV 24/7 since we live in a ghost town where nothing outdoor is of interest.

I'll let you know how it goes :)

Get yourself a router with good QoS so you don't have to worry about your gaming latency.

The D-Link DGL-4300 is a good choice, on sale at Frys.com for about $70.

ohh thank you so much for the info :) My current router is Motorolla BR700 which I got for $14 .. 3 years ago ! Well... the IPTV tech is supposed to come to the house tonight to bring the IPTV box and hook it up. I'll be ready to be on Counterstrike and to note the changes to my latency PING TIME. I'll let u all know how it goes

update: Last nite the tech guy came and hooked-up their IPTV box to my dad's TV and the other end to an ethernet cable that goes to my router's last available port. With the IPTV box turned off, my Counterstrike multiplayer shows about 53ms ping time. With the IPTV box turned on, my ping time remains the same !! so I'm very happy :)
