I've got a few Hanns-G HZ281HPB. Got the last couple for $240 @ Newegg. I really like these displays, they are fast enough, have a great viewing angle, they are huge and the are bright.

So I've been reading about these IPS panels like they are some kind of must have but they seem really pricey compared to the $240 I gave for the Hanns-G HZ281HPB.

Anybody seen both the Hanns-G HZ281HPB and an IPS panel? Anybody know what technology is in the Hanns-G HZ281HPB? Is it an MVA?

I just returned my friend's IPS monitor and went back to my I-inc (a version of your Hanns-G) but with 1920x1200 resolution. Now I am suffering from IPS withdrawl - colors are much better.

What kind of IPS did your friend have? I likely have the same I-Inc that you have and have been contemplating getting one of the Catleap monitors. Care to share any comparisons between your I-Inc and your friend's monitor?

Your Hanns-G monitors are TN panels. If you're happy with them don't worry about it. People in online forums always love to help you spend you money when you don't need to.

Yeah, the last time I invested money on an expensive display I hated it.

The folks on the internet raved about how good the ViewSonic VP191B was. I shelled out 450 bucks for that thing and hated it because it was too slow and had noticeable ghosting. The
ViewSonic VP191B was a MVA panel. Hated it.

Some of my local friends have speculated that I got a bad one that was somehow slower than it should have been?

So is there a way to check out the IPS panels in a brick and mortar store? Displays don't seem to marketed by panel type. How do you know what type of panel a given display uses?

Microcenter has IPS panels.

According to this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD

Hannstar (Hanns.G parent company) makes S-IPS panels.

Also my HZ281 does not suffer from the color shifts that TN panels are said to suffer from.

My laptop almost certainly has a TN panel. You must be in exactly the right spot to view the screen or the colors and brightness get all out of whack, but the Hanns.G has great viewing angles. Are you guys sure it isn't an IPS panel? Are you sure it is an AMC Gremlin?

Please do not respond negatively towards the Hanns unless you have specific knowledge or have viewed the display yourself.

Depends what your primary use on your PC is. Graphics? Gaming? Productivity apps?
I got rid of my Hanns-G and upgraded to a Samsung S27A950D 27" 120hz LED not too long ago. A few things.... I really miss the massive 1920x1200 rez display on my Hanns-G. However I don't think I can go back to a 60hz monitor after experiencing FPS games in 120hz. I guess it really depends on personal preference and what your going to be using your monitor for. For me, sticking with a TN panel was fine over IPS because of the upgrade to 120hz for gaming purposes. I also don't have the beastly hardware to enjoy gaming in 2560x1440.

I do miss the screen real estate though on the Hanns-G and it was fine for every day productivity use in my opinion.

It is a TN panel using the model number brings it right up. 28inch TN panel if it was a 28inch IPS panel it would cost another 200$

And it is still crappy 1980x1200 res =/

If you do not want to spend the money and your fine with the panel you have then keep it..

If you want something that blows it away get a 2560x1440 27inch ips panel.

hokies83 where are you seeing this TN thing? Could you please post a link? I've been looking and all I see is that it is a "TFT" which is not definitive.

Ok I'm starting to believe. I found a site saying that the panel is a TN panel and complaining about the vertical viewing angle. The Hanns is so much better than my laptop I didn't even notice but yeah if you stand up and lean forward the colors do get a little wonky (nothing like the laptop).

It's all personal preference. A lot of people here are OCD about certain things... to me the viewing angles of the Hanns-G was perfectly fine to "me" when I had it. Definitely nothing like a cheap laptop screen. To others, anything with a TN panel is atrocious. To some it's fine. To each their own. Just take a look at the displays in person and make your own decision. For me, the 1920x1200 resolution on the Hanns-G was more than enough.

Well the way i compare a 1080i TN panel to a 2560x1440 Ips panel to get a Visual comparing when you do not have one in front of you to look at..

Your Brand new Led Lcd Vs your Mid 90s 480i Tube TV.

Most New owners are in Shock of the diff when they first get them.. ive had 2560x1440p / 2560x1600 for last 5 years im used to it lol.

I also own a near 3000$ Edge Lit 120hz Samsung 3d TV.. and my 300 $ Korean Panel blows it away.

TV i have http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2063116&CatId=3807
