Hello all,
I currently have a Samsung B2430 24’’ LCD monitor which I bought last year. I would have gotten an IPS but the prices were too high back then. Now I am thinking of getting a Dell U2312HM LED IPS monitor.
There are a few things I want to know before buying, one of them is its suitability for games which I will be mainly using it for. I have read the review for U2311 and found it’s quite good for gaming (low input lag, ghosting response time etc...) so I am hoping it will be the same. The reason I am worried is that I don’t want an inferior gaming experience compared to my current monitor.
Another thing is because there is no HDMI connection I will be forced to use HDMI to DisplayPort cable to connect my PS3 (DVI will be occupied by PC) so I want to know if there will be any loss in image quality?
Lastly is it really worth upgrading? Any comments will be highly appreciated.
Cheers

Input lag/ghosting should be fine unless you're very sensitive. Dell's newer eIPS displays -- on average -- have a smidgen faster response time than the normal Ultrahsarps. So if the U2311 was fine, the U2312HM is the same or better.

You can convert from HDMI <-> DP or DVI no problem. They're all pure digital connections and interchangable for most intents and purposes, so there wont' be any loss of quality. Grab a cheap converter from monoprice and off ya go.

This is a link to a Dell U2412M review, which is sorta kinda like the U2312HM's bigger brother. If you look in the Responsiveness and Gaming section, they show ghosting with the U2312HM as well as other monitors, including TN panels.

As to if it's worth it, that's up to you. What do you want out of an IPS? You'll gain better viewing angles and higher color accuracy (even though eIPS still 6-bit like your current monitor it pulls off colors better and can still calibrate to full Adobe RGB). If you're happy with the colors of your monitor, don't have any annoying backlight bleed, and don't have viewing angle issues there probably isn't any reason to upgrade. Personally I would say go for it, but I'm biased towards IPS displays so take that with a grain of salt. I also don't know how the image quality would compare to your current Samsung -- TN panels can be all across the board when it comes to image quality.

koolman007 I'm kind of on the fence about monitors too, I also have a Samsung and I'm quite happy with it but am itching to switch to a dual monitor setup since I'm used to it at work. Just seems so limiting to have only one screen! I'm also afraid that I'll replace it and be unimpressed with the image quality or what have you (I built another system with a different Samsung and I definitely prefer mine).

Have you been able to see the one you're eyeing in person?

that U2412M does look very nice

I have a fast BenQ TN at home with a sub 2ms response time and 2 HP ZR24w's at work. I have taken my work monitor home and hooked it to my desktop to test gaming on the IPS panel and for most games its fine, anything RTS or turn based cant tell the difference. But when i fire up a fast paced FPS that i have spent lots of of hours on i can notice the difference, not really in the input lag or response time but ghosting for sure is noticable.

As far as color definition and viewing angles obviously the IPS panel is by far the better choice.

If you do alot of FPS gaming i would not go to IPS.

thx all for the replies. I have been doing a lot of research and found that HDMI to DP wont work directly and i need an active convertor to get signal from PS3 to Dell, and considering the price of these convertors is too high i am better off buying something with both HDMI and DVI.
So enter the ASUS PA238Q 23'' IPS monitor. Now there are not enough reviews on it atm becuase it has been released recently but its bigger brother which is a 24'' is getting quite alot of praise from gamers and casual users alike. The price is a bit high, almost £50 more than the Dell but because its has a 8 bit panel and all the connectivity options that i need, I think it will be more sensible option to go for.
As for ghosting in FPS games, tbh i play all sorts of games and never really noticed anything like it, maybe I never had a bad monitor before or maybe i am not hyper sensitive towards noticing such occurrences.
Since I use my monitor for long duration of time, and use it to watch from catchup TV to movies and games I think it would be wiser to go for more expensive and better tech than what I have now.
Again I would love to hear your opinions about this monitor or any other alternatives...
thanks again
