iPodLinux vs. Rockbox?

Ika

Lifer
I'm very close to buying a new 80GB 5.5G iPod, but I'm not planning on staying with the standard iPod firmware. That said, I've only seen rockbox and iPodLinux as alternatives. First of all, the main reason for using different firmware is much-needed FLAC support and custom equalizer (as well as other sound improvements, like crossfeed). It's tough finding hard info on either of these two, so I'm not even sure if iPodLinux will support FLAC at all? I know rockbox has custom sound settings, but will iPodLinux support sound enhancements?

Will either of these even work on the new iPod?

Is there much difference between the two?

Not sure, but if you can, get the 80gig at Costco, so you can take it back when the new touchscreen one releases.

I just got mine there.

I'm gonna do research about the stuff you mentioned though.....they sound cool.

Costco was where I was planning to get mine. I'm probably not planning on getting a touchscreen iPod, because I'm assuming that the models are going to be $$$ful, and I need space more than movie functionality.

I just checked out both the software you are looking at.

Rock Box supports 4g and 5g (and 5.5g) players.....

LinuxIPod only support 1,2,3 gen....

Personally, I would just stick with the IPOD software as I think it works fine.....

I love the 80gig, I have a 7inch portable Screen adapter for it......it's really nice.

HERE

It's great.....awesome video output, 4 hour battery life and it keeps the girlfriend quiet on the commute to work everyday.

Guide to installing iPL on 5G iPods

Some sleuthing got me that. Looks good.

Doesn't anyone else know anything about these two? There's gotta be someone...
