iPod Won't Work With Front USB. HELP.

So I got a 60GB video iPod today. I now have a SERIOUS case of buyers remorse but I figure I'll get over it.

Anyway, for some reason the iPod won't work when plugged into the front USB ports on my case. The back USB ports work fine but the front gives me a USB icon in the taskbar and when I click on it it says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. The location of the device is shown in bold type". However, there is no device listed in bold type. No device is listed at all.

I don't understand why it will work in the back but not the front. I have an A8N32-SLI motherboard and its fully USB 2.0 compliant. The iPod will charge when plugged into the front but Windows simply will not recognize it. Yeah, I know the simple solution would be to just plug it into the back of the case but thats a real hassle and there is no reason as far as I can see that it shouldn't work in the front.

Like I said above, I thought at first that the front USB ports weren't 2.0 which the iPod requires/prefers (not sure which), but they are all 2.0 compliant.

Any ideas or solutions to this problem?

Thanks.

Either

-You cannot plug in the USB all the way.
-the USB port cannot support the Ipod, so you must plug it directly to the mobo.

Many cases just weren't USB 2.0 compliant before (even though they were advertised to be), exhibiting the same symptoms you have described. Which case are you using? You might want to try contacting your case manufacturer for replacement ports. Or maybe see if you wired them up wrong 😛

If it's an Antec case, give them a call or e-mail them. They hooked me up with a USB 2.0 compliant one that works.

I had that exact message on a board with a burst cap that had damaged (but not completely destroyed) the usb controller for the front ports.

Your board is a lot newer so that seems unlikely, but maybe worth a look if nothing else pans out.

Have you ever managed to connect anything else to that port?
Try it. Try to connect a simple USB mouse - these are 1.1 devices, not 2.0.

Anyway, the USB host controller on your motherboard detects a new peripheral by checking resistance on one of the USB lines. Your USB connection might be completely inverted (D-/D+ lines interchanged), and Windows will still detect the device you've connected - but of course, it wouldn't be able to communicate with it (a process called enumeration) and you'll get that message you're getting.

If any device connected to these ports yields the same error, I suggest you check the case USB header coming to the motherboard.

I thought Pod's worked on USB1.1 - just that it's slower than USB2.0

If the MoBo has USB2.0, the physical ports 'shouldnt' really matter. There's not going to be a huge amount of resistance in them.

Are you certain it charges properly?

The physical ports do matter. There was a well-known situation with Antec cases. USB 2.0 is supposed to downgrade itself to 1.1, but for some reason certain ports just didn't do it. But the other good idea mentioned is to try a mouse on those ports, if those work then contact your case manufacture.

I have an antec case and my 4g and shuffle both work in the front ports. Also i think ipods also work with USB 1.1, i remember plugging the shuffle into one of the comps at uni and it worked. They are 1.1.

I would also guess the front port wires on the mobo are connected incorrectly.

The Ipods will work (i.e. be seen by the OS) with USB1.1, but they won't charge correctly because there is not enough voltage.
