ipod wont turn on - battery?

I bought an ipod video 30GB for $5 that won't power on. Nothing appears on the screen. The guy I bought it from said he took it to an apple store and was told it needed to be "reprogrammed" (his words) for around $50 or $60.
Is there any way to tell if it's just the battery before I ordered one to try?
It's not something I want to put much money in as I never wanted an ipod (I have other mp3 players).

Well, have you tried holding the center button and the menu button at the same time? Sometimes that will turn it on when nothing else will. If that doesn't work, then it probably does need a new battery.

Tell you what, since you don't want an ipod, and if it is dead, name a decent price and I may buy it from you.
