ipod won't turn off

when i try to turn off my ipod i hold the play/pause button but it does nothing, and i also tried to select "sleep" but it does nothing also. my ipod rests in a ihome all day and i can turn it off if it is plugged into the ihome but i can't turn if off when it is not docked in the ihome...why is this? and how do i change it??
