iPod won't boot past apple screen

Some back story:

I recently replaced the screen and battery of iPod. I Menu+Rew'ed and ran all the diagnostic tests. It passed them all. Windows chkdsk revealed no bad sectors on hard drive. I have zeroed out the HD and restored with itunes multiple times to no avail. It just hangs on the apple screen. Strangely enough, if I install Rockbox in disc mode, the ipod loads the 3rd party firmware.

Any idea how I can get the original firmware working?

I'm not sure about the classic iPods but I do know you can do a system restore (firmware) through iTunes for the Touch and iPhone. Try that.

been there, done that.

I have a feeling that there is something wrong with the partition table. problem is, on all the computers i try to restore, the error still remains.

Any other ideas?
