Wondering if anyone knows what is going on, when charging a 1.5 year old IPOD, it got so hot that part of the front started to melt (plastic started to get wavie). Now it doesn't work at all.

Is this a common battery problem, like the batteries in laptops?

Can this thing be fixed or any chance that this is a factory defect that Apple will fix.

any suggestions how to deal w/ this is welcomed

thanks

Well, if you have their extended warranty they'll take care of it, but otherwise you should be looking for a replacement.

That is most definitely a product defect, not to mention a fire hazard. If it's still under warranty get in touch with Apple. If it's not under warranty maybe call them up irate and tell them they're lucky it didn't burn your house down, maybe this will coerce them into fixing/replacing it.

If it's out of warranty you can try replacing the battery yourself. It's pretty easy if you follow one of those guides. I definitely wouldn't keep using it with the current battery though. Best case, you just ruin the ipod completely. Worst case, you'll get burned or burn your house down.
