Ipod trouble

Ok so my brother never really uses his so I was going to try and use it myself. THe battery is dead and I can't find the attachment to just plug it into an outlet. Most ipods I have delt with are newer generation and most times you can jsut plug them into a PC and they will charge. When i attempt to plug this on in the computer doesn't recognize it nor does it start to charge. I tried both with and with out the dock. Any thoughts? Its in very good condition from limited use so I don't think its broken but I can't be sure. Thanks!
