iPod Touch with busted home button questions, please

Hello All
I found a 2nd gen iPod touch that works ok but has a busted home button and headphone jack. I can live without the jack for now but no home button is a PIA. It was running iOS4.1 I was hoping find an app to get get around the busted button but can't seem to find anything that will work. Any ideas? I can drop it back to iOS 4.0 but nothing earlier than that will work in restore mode and I can't use the home button to try anything else.

Thanks
Brian

I'm not much help but some:
I just got a busted up iPhone 3g and the screen was shattered and the back plastic is cracked. I ordered a housing and glass with digitizer off of ebay for about $15 total

My point with that is ebay is one of the cheapest places to get parts 😉

Now looking at this picture (2nd gen iPod Touch)
zdaklbxhmwnpxalx.jpg

It looks like the the piece is soldered on (it about $5 on ebay)

The piece for the home button is about $10 on ebay
For $15 you would have a working iPod Touch 😀

EDIT:

I'm stupid and it's the morning I just realized you are looking for a software fix to get around the home button

Fuck me.

I think Activator can do it. You can use it with Backgrounder to exit apps at least and I think using it with SwitcherMod might let you bring up the task manager.

These are all jailbreak apps and you may need the home button to enter DFU for jailbreaking, depending on your model.

If I were you, I'd just fix it for cheap.

I was thinking of fixing but I'd be nice to use it some. I wasn't sure I could mention jailbreaking here. It seems like that might be an option as ther is a website to make it really easy to to without using DFU. I'll have to see if those apps work for iOS4
Oh and Alfa147x thanks for the tips and the picture. It will help when I tackle opening up this thing!

I think this is your best option. Activator can assign almost any task to various button presses and screen gestures. I think it also installs alongside SBSettings so most people have it already and don't know it.

Only 4.0.1 and earlier can be broken with Jailbreakme.com, so I hope you haven't upgraded past that.FWIW, I once jailbroke with Spirit and needed to restore when I reset all settings (it caused it to freeze at boot), so I'm wary of using any userland exploit, like JBme, for the long-term without the ability to do a full restore.

Yeah I was able to go back to 4.0 but not earlier. The jailbreakme worked great but it seemed like I couldn;t find 4.0 friendly app. I almost went with Spirit but I thought it had to have the 3.xx iOS and I can't seem to load that firmware into the ipod. I guess I'm glad I didn't. I would actually like to try the 3.xx iOS as I'm still not convinced the problems are hardware related but I can't use DFU cause of the button and in the recovery mode it seems the firmware won't let me goe back earlier than the 4.0

On another note...
Is it really "that easy" to crack open one of these with a plastic tool and some patience? I work with small stuff all the time under a microscope but am still afraid of lunching the thing!

Oh and Thanks!! everybody!

What generation is it? But yes it is, just be patient.

I've only opened iPhones, but my recommendations are:
First, if it's anything like the iPhone, use a suction cup to lift the screen instead of a plastic pry tool. I've broken the tools and marred the rubber seal and STILL not gotten them out where the suction cup lifted out right away. I found a two-pack for about $1 at Petco.

Second, be extra careful with the flat cable connectors. Some dis-assembly guides fail to tell you anything more than "lift the latch" and it is impossible to tell by looking that some of them lift the opposite way than you might expect from dealing with other low-profile flat cable connectors.
