Ipod Touch vs. Iphone vs. Iphone 2.0

The only difference between the Touch and Iphone was cell service.

The only difference between Iphone and Iphone 2 is GPS/Cell bands.

Is my best bet to get an old Iphone and then I can use a skype application for phone service and by pass AT&T, because the Touch doesn't have a microphone, right?

Is the Touch not getting any upgrades passed down from the new iphone?

The only real upgrades to the new iPhone were the 3G and GPS, both of which require cell phone networks which the Touch can't and won't support.

So to answer your question, no, as of now the touch remains unchanged.

Correct, the touch does not have either a Mic or a Speaker, so without a dock attachment (supposedly in the works from 3rd parties), your SOL for Skype on the Touch.

Personally I would wait until there is an official Skype app for the iPhone. The current way of doing it through Fring is apparently very unreliable and finicky (though i've never tried myself)

You can purchase a TouchMod for about $50 which adds a mic to the Touch. Works great, I use it all the time on mine.

As for Fring, it's pretty good. At least that's been my experience.

There won't be an official Skype app- AT&T and Apple have publicly said that VOIP will not be allowed. Your only hope is a jailbroken alternative.

edit: Note to self: Google before posting. It won't be limited over WiFi, just the AT&T network, which is what you were asking about in the first place.

According to this March article, you might have a few options.

They have? Last I heard a few months ago was that Apple said they wouldn't restrict its use over Wifi.

Eh? So i was right?

I was trying to find the article where I saw it mentioned during the Q&A following the Apple SDK conference where someone specifically asked about skype and he said they wouldn't restrict its use over Wifi, but as with all things lately, I can't find it. 🙂

EDIT: There it is; http://gizmodo.com/364775/appl...-allow-voip-over-wi+fi and http://weblogs.redeyechicago.c...3/the-power-of-vo.html

They make the battery life seem like it's better on the iPhone 3G. Is that true? I know I don't get nearly 200 hours of standby time on my iPhone.
