So uh . . . I just got the iPod Touch 8gig, installed iTunes, and was off and running . . . until this morning.

iTunes asks if I want to upgrade the iOS - version 4.3.3, I think - and I think nothing of it and I say okay.

Well, it does upgrade (I think) and now all sorts of issues surface:

- The iTunes keeps freezing when trying to sync
- I ended up reformatting the iTouch which isn't that big a deal since all my apps are in my itunes acct and I just got it recently so not much info is lost

- Now everytime I boot up the iTunes with my touch attached it asks if I want to restore my old settings - inevitably this freezes and when I close using task manager and restart the system, iTunes reads the touch fine; all the apps are re-loaded, I can load podcasts onto it fine . . . but my music cannot be ported onto it - the very same music I had before the upgrade; wtf?

tl;dr?
- Upgraded iPod Touch to 4.3.3
- Some headaches with iTunes
- All the apps/podcasts sync w/ iTunes and iPod, except when I try to put music onto the thing . . . wtf?

How do I fix this?

Is the iPod set to manually allow you to manage music? It should be a checkbox in one of the tabs on the right pane after you click on the iPod in the device list. Check that, then you can drag and drop. Otherwise it only syncs playlists. I think that's what you're talking about, anyway.

iTunes syncing on my iPhone 4 have been pretty darn slow since the "upgrade" to 4.3.3.

It may have nothing to do with your problem, but just wanted to mention it.

Ah, I figured it out:

It freezes/messes up when I highlight/checkmark the "downgrade higher-bitrate music files into 128 bit AAC" or whatever the equivalent is.

Have to say - admitting that the build quality on it is nice, nicer than a lot of stuff out there - with iTunes regularly freezing up for no apparent reason and certain functions outright non-functional, I'm definitely thinking it's not all that the Apple fanboys build it up to be.

Heh, I normally disable that first thing :) I only downconvert to the old 1st gen 1GB shuffle that I use from time to time for exercising.

I really disliked iTunes on Windows. While I liked the interface, it's performance was pretty subpar. Dragging across a few hundred songs to sync I had to be very careful and leave the mouse over the device entry in order to make sure stuff synced. Overall I never had it as bad as everyone else reported, but it certainly wasn't the best performing thing out there.

On OSX, it's a night and day difference. Performance -- even on lower end hardware -- is much better. Dragging across the same amount of files to sync happened without delay or hangs.

I liken it to a bad port.

Funny that you say that, I was just thinking about this the other day. IMO, iTunes has always been like this since it's port to Windows. I've never had a completely solid experience with it. It's the only Apple software I use ever, but it really is rather inconvienent knowing that OSX users get such a wonderful experience. I just wish Apple would be kind for once and say, "hey, we're going to rebuild this for Windows to let them have a good user experience, too."

I've never had major issues with iTunes, but I've had enough issues to know that Apple doesn't really care for it's Windows counterpart (which is an obvious statement).
