You're not that obtuse so, save the sophistry for your briefs. You rather argue trivia than substantive facts.

Which piece of technology has more functions is beside the point. If you ask a 8 year old if they'd rather play games with mom and dad or on a tiny screen by themselves, they'll pick time with mom and dad.

You are assuming that playing with the Touch is taking the place of playing with mom and dad.

Last I heard, radios and cheap mp3 players without a breakable screen play music just fine.

But they do not play games. And game consoles do not play music.

There is simply no justification for giving an 8 year old something small, breakable and, eminently losable as a $200 to $300 dollar piece of tech.

It is a great way to teach them how to follow rules and to take some responsibility for their items (because if they don't follow the rules or mistreat the items, they get taken away). In return, they get a great music player and game machine.

Why do you guys waste your time with him ??

It is interesting to see how a dumb wild beast reacts when cornered.

I'm ready:

Do you think 8 years old is too young for a ipod touch???

There's no single standard for "8 years old". However, this particular child has a track record of losing portable electronics which would disturb me. Clearly, anyone who is likely to lose a $200 item regardless of their age probably shouldn't have one given to them. That said, this is not the entire issue, and there are measures which can be taken to reduce the chance of loss -- e.g. disallow its usage outside of home.

My child went through a similar want at a similar age, and we decided to get him an iPad instead, which is also to be shared with the rest of the family. It's a better device, better on the eyes, and also usable by others (once in a blue moon).

Moreover, the child is required to earn all applications on that device by reading x number of pages/chapters per $ of application cost. (This scales according to ability and I should really raise the price because he's sitting on a surplus).

So while it's unfortunate to get whined and pushed into getting an expensive device, it can be turned around into something more beneficial.

What generation of ipod touch should I get, in terms of screen quality and durability? the budget is no more than $200, 8 gig version is fine. This is for a 5 year old (only during long trips) to play as a game device. It will be given at the start of a trip and will be confiscated as soon as the trip is over. He doesn't need it at home since he already has a Wii.

If your budget is $200, might as well get the gen 4 with the 960x480 res.
You can find the 8gb brand new for <=$200.
Get a 1 yr warranty too and not worry about messing with the used market.

awesome, any online place you would suggest? I looked at amazon.com and it's about $215 and Ebay just confused the heck out of me.

Sorry I am slow to get back here.
Mid afternoon on Monday my grand daughter was rushed to the hospital with a virus, flu and a partially collapsed lung from all the coughing. She suffered a reaction to one of the meds given to her and was on a special breathing maching to help her. The doctors were able to drain fluid out of the lung and she is feeling better. She'll be in the ICU for another day or so. Hopefully she will be home by Sunday to watch the Super Bowl with the family.
I have another question and will start a new thread.
Thanks to all who responded.
