iPod Touch acting odd

So when I first plug in my iPod Touch to charge it it will work fine, it shows the bolt of electricity symbol for charging and appears to be getting some juice. After awhile though it the bolt symbol turns into a plug symbol and it will stop charging. In that time I hadn't touched itunes or the touch. It will continue to switch back and forth between the two which makes it take forever to charge. Any idea what is going on here?

Make sure you have it plugged into a 2.0 usb port, usually in the back of your pc coming off the mobo. This could be the problem.
