iPod touch 32GB Backlight issues

Just got my new iPod touch, loving it but sometimes when i unlock it the screen comes on with the back light but it starts to slowly fade out until its completely gone, leaving the screen extremely dark.

This has happened quite a few times, perhaps one out of every 5 times I've unlocked the thing and I've used it for 2 days now. It occurs regardless of lighting conditions so I'm not sure the cause, nothings covering the light sensor on the top. Thanks
 
I noticed it happening more frequently on my iPhone after upgrading to 1.1.4. I think it's the sensor at the top adjusting to the lighting conditions. I only notice it getting dimmer when I'm in a dark room.
 
Hmm well I wouldn't be able to compare it to anything, as it was updated as soon as it was plugged in. I do notice it flickering alot at times as though its adjusting to light ~10 times a second as its moved around
