Do you charge after every time you use? Or do you run it dead then charge?

Anyone know of a utility to do mass re-naming of mp3's? and their id3 tags?

New iPods are supposed to be better at that...but I still don't like the fact you can't change it yourself (AFAIK). I guess Apple's market isn't exactly the battery changing type, but still.

I'm thinking about getting a 4th gen ipod, what 'issues' are there?

after a long arse time they wear down. but now that you can buy replacements, i dont think it's a problem

There shouldn't be that many. It's mostly the older ones...the batteries just stop holding charge.

i plug my zen in when ever im not useing it

I use ID3 Tag-It to do mass renameing and taging, just as powerfull as Tag & Rename but its FREE

Nobody will know for a while if the batteries are any better. Did Apple make the batteries removable on the 4G iPods?

Once it gets old enough, it will. You just can't manufacture a battery that will last forever.

well, a lot of iPod minis have this problem. maybe not as high as the 2nd generation regular iPods, but still.

anyways, they tend to stop holding charge after a while. apple replaces or repairs them if you still have warranty but it still sucks to know that apple can't fix this issue after 4 generations of ipod.

Does that support both wma and mp3 tagging, formula renaming, and filename to tag conversion?

doesnt do WMA but does the rest of it

Dont' do what otwell said. Letting Litium batts go near dead is very bad for them and
reduces their lifespan. Top up the charge often to prolong the battery's life and charge it
when the meter reads half way if possible. Take the ipod out of whatever case it is in while
its charging to keep it cool, and dont let it sit in the car or anywhere it may get hot.

I charge it whenever I'm not using it. Or when it gets to the 50% mark. Btw, I have the 4th generation one.

Does anyone know if the battery meter hack will work on the 4th gen? (i.e. using the terminal to touch a blank file which shows a numerical value instead of the battery meter.)

I always keep it on the charger when I'm at my desk. After a few weeks of using it like that, my iPod mini manages to get 8 hours of life.

You'd do well to do a few searches in OT and in general hardware, I've detailed many a problem with iPods in threads in both forums, battery issues being the least of their problems. If you want a quick rundown PM me, otherwise search. I'm not going over it here because I'm not up for the requisite 3-page flamewar with the fanboys.

Too bad the chip in the iPod supports WMA and the iPod firmware disables this support. WMA rocks for lower quality encoding. We need a "home-made" firmware to enable WMA support. You guys listening out there? 😉

Goto ipodlounge and you can get all the info you need.
I do know you are NEVER to let the battery die before charging,I always just docked mine every night and it was good to go in the morning...

It's not even that.. my GF can't get through the day at work without her battery dying.
I got it for her birthday, August 5th. Less than a week ago. the battery takes 4 hours or more to charge, and less than 8 hours to die. It really sucks hard. it's the only thing I hate about the iPod.

Well, at least it holds some charge. I charged mine overnight yesterday and it died at 1 hour 15 minutes today

When I get my repaired or replacement unit back from Apple, I am eBaying it and getting something else. Possibly a Tohiba Gigabeat 20GB. Looks better than iPod, smaller than iPod, lighter than iPod. What else could I want? 🙂
