are there other alternatives to adding songs to an ipod, and making playlists by not using itunes? id rather not get caught up in that mess

it doesnt. only itunes will work with the ipod, unless some tiny company has written a bit of freeware that apple hasnt caught word of yet.

As much as I hate iTunes, I have to admit, after trying a few other programs, iTunes is pretty much the only reliable option. :( There's a winamp plugin that seemed to work for a while but my iPod got all screwed up after a while :confused: and froze solid. It took some work, but I ultimately managed to reflash it to get it going again.

aye. anapod is actually quite good....it is made by Redchair software.

Even then, I have found itunes indispensible

YES. Ephpod is great because of the flexibility to change whatever song you want, whenever and not have to store your library on your PC.
