well for what he's using it for, screen's not going to make a big difference.

When you have a gig of music, trust me, it will make a difference. My muvo is the oldest one, and is only 64MB (got it for ~40 bucks) and the lack of a screen makes it a PITA.

Plus, @ $99 for 512 mb, you're paying for the apple name.
i used to have this old samsung 32 mb mp3 player with no screen that i used to use for the gym and jogging. it always stayed tucked in my pocket and the music just plays. nearly everyone i've seen at the gym and on the jogging trails with some kind of digital music player doesn't even look at their player while working out.

With a gig of music walking around campus or on commuter train i'd definitely want a screen. But the OP says its for the gym and jogging so no screen might not bother him. The shuffle has its niche, but for everything else the OP wanted, i'd go with the muvo.

I can see how you'd not need it while not working out, but why not get a screen anyway, so you can do those other things?

I ordered a 512mb Shuffle the other day as a bday present for my girl. She uses iTunes as her main audio program. From what I've read, it's very, very easy to use (the Shuffle, that is). The size was appealing because she walks everywhere on campus and can also use it for workouts. It's small, it's cool, it's simple to use, and it fits her needs. I just hope it arrives in time (2 - 3 week delivery 🙁)

WTF we actually have to divide the space in advance for music vs data? Never needed to do that with the regular iPods...

umm... as far as I know, unless you did a little know-how, you could not get to the music files on an IPOD. It was separate from the data. You could not do drag and drop like the OP wants.

anyway, the shuffle and navigating 1GB of music w/o a screen.. well, that's the whole point, complete randomness. If you don't like it, it's not for you, plain and simple.

Good luck. Since it's a (non geek, I assume) girl, she'll probably be happier that you bought her a 'brand name' apple. But if it gets you some, hey 😀

Ipod (HD based one) > Creative Zen Touch (HD based)

Simple as that.
Make it complicated. Specifically, what makes it greater?

Look at my post above, and that is the Zen not Muvo versus the Mini, not the Shuffle. Apples to oranges, sir.
That would be because I was talking to Lyfer, not you... sir!
You linked to a review of two products that Lyfer didn't even mention.

from the pics in this thread, isn't the shuffle a lot lighter and thinner than the alternatives ?

like 3 times lighter and thinner ?

Not really, I haven't seen the Shuffle, but afaik, it's about the same size as the Muvo. Maybe a bit thinner.

I've been thinking about getting one tonight, just because I need a thumbdrive too...but I it's 2x the price for a 1 gig unit, and looks pretty "big" to fit in pockets comfortably. Maybe I'll get one and just use it at the gym and for class...hmmm.

that and I wish i could "test drive" a pair of Etymotic ER-6i's vs Shure E3c's.

no its definetly thinner. muvo is 2.5x larger. as for what kroze bought.. the ipod shuffle is 4 times smaller😛 and only a few dollars more considering it has twice the memory which is what matters most. bah. haters have gotta stfu really.

yup, whats so hard to figure out, its a workout device and such, not a harddrive player replacement. the divided data/mp3 bit is there probably because of the random autofill feature. thing is convenient if you work out often and don't want to make a playlist everytime..thats just work.

I got a 1GB Shuffle for my daughter the other day, and she could not be happiper. Of course, she is only 7 and it works to her advantage that there is no screen to break or hard drive to screw up. I prefer my Mini for the price difference but I would not hesitate to get one of these for the gym (if I ever make it there again).
