iPod Screwed Up!

I got a 5th generation version 1 30GB iPod. Recently, I 've been unable to turn it on. It does these clicking sounds and then an ipod with a sad face appears on screen. I've tried everything on the apple site and it hasn't worked. However, I don't want to pay for repairs. What can I do?

ipods have hard drives. hard drives typically make clicking noises when they are failing. the sad face it makes is that you have to pay for the repairs. is yours no longer under any warranty, or out of the 6 month one where you need to pay for the shipping back and forth/processing fees. may i ask how much were the repairs going to cost you and what the ipod is worth?

The iPod is worth about 240 now, and the repairs were gonna cost upwards of 120 without shipping.

I am looking to replace the hard drive on the iPod, I know it's doable because I've seen features on TV which told about how to do this. I only need to know what Hard drive exactly I need to buy which will fit and be compatible with my 30GB iPod.

http://www.command-tab.com/2007/03/11/upgrading-ipod-hard-drives/ is worth checking out. when you take the hard drive out of yours, you could just buy the same model to replace it with as well, if you want to stay at 30GB.

Alright, I found out that the hard drive that is compatible with my iPod is the MK3008GAL. What's the best place I can get it from for the lowest price?

It's the same model number. However, what does Bare Drive mean?

"bare drive"= OEM drive in brown box its just the HD without any retail packaging (saves money, no filler stuff that would be included with it since its not a retail package, warranty is different as well)

your fine since the HD is what you need,(do they even sell those in retail boxes?) main thing is getting the os installed on the new HD for the ipod, etc. follow the guide i linked. now is the time to get a larger drive if you want too.

Will I be able to install it into my iPod? Are there any special mounts or similar things that I would need but won't have or be able to use?

your questions are starting to get over my head. start looking up how tos on replacing ipod hard drives. from what i saw, you just need the hard drive since you can reuse everything else. that link you gave is only a 30day warranty. i would not spend 120 bucks on something refurbished that might fail on the 31st day. you have the model #, etc of the drive already since you took your ipod apart. googling that and find a new drive, hopefully with a year warranty for less money and read a few how to's on replacing the hard drive as well. i'm sure after you read a few you will be confident and have all your concerns and questions answered.

Yeah, thank you for the help so far. I'll just try explaining one more time for you and anyone else who might want to help.

I haven't taken the iPod apart yet. That said, I've looked up the model number of the hard drive it uses on google, and have found the hard drive on mwave for a nice price of about $85. I looked and found some iPod Hard Drive replacement tutorials and have seen that it's quite doable.

However, I have one last question. In my last post, I posted a link which showed a hard drive with these weird blue things which looked like mounts on either side of it. From what I've seen, I know my iPod Hard drive has these "mounts." Can I reuse the ones I have on a plain hard drive that I'll buy from mwave? Are these even needed?

I've tried searching for this on the internet but haven't found anything about the mounts. Maybe I've overlooked something? Any help would be appreciated.

since you havent opened it, and i can not find anything refering to those blue mount looking things, i would believe they are easy to take off, either they slide off the hard drive or can be unscrewed and mounted on another hard drive. but without opening it and closely examining it, i have no idea either. the blue things look to give the drive more width, and hold it in place to the ipod's frame/tray thing.
